[FOR SALE] Two Rebuilt Carter AFB Carburetors Ready to Run (Not Edelbrock AVS)

I'm selling two rebuilt Carter AFB carburetors number 4299S that came factory on 1966 - 1967 automatic non-CAP 383, 426 wedge, and 440 engines according to one of my books and limited to 1967 383 and 440 according to another book. Both carburetors are rebuilt with high-quality parts including...

    Hylift Johnson Lifters Quality Decreasing?

I think I read a response of yours in another thread about having success with the Melling hydraulic lifters, and I was very tempted to go with the Melling JB2011 at $5/ea. Then I came across a set of Lunati Micro-Trol for $6.25/ea and was sold after confirming they are Topline USA cast bodies...

    Hylift Johnson Lifters Quality Decreasing?

The verdict is in: Topline Auto's "Hylift Johnson" hydraulic flat tappet lifters #5003 have shoddy finish and quality control compared to its competitors, and Hughes Engines has nonexistent customer service. I received a set of Lunati "Micro-Trol" 71977 lifters, and all 16 have immaculate...

    Hylift Johnson Lifters Quality Decreasing?

Coincidentally, I got my camshaft from Mike Jones in 2021, but he was out of stock on these particular Hylift Johnson lifters when I last checked. According to him in our conversation, Hylift Johnson of Muskegon, MI is the only manufacturer casting, machining, and assembling lifters in the US as...

    Hylift Johnson Lifters Quality Decreasing?

Thanks for the input and photo, which is much different than the ones I received. Knowing what yours looked like, I'll see if Hughes has a pack they can exchange.

    Hylift Johnson Lifters Quality Decreasing?

With all the lifter problems in the last decade, Hylift Johnson lifters (not Johnson Lifters with imported castings) had remained a quality manufacturer cast and machined in the USA. Those days of quality might be over or at least numbered from my experience this past month. In June 2023 I...

TF 727 Push-button Output Hub Converting to U-Joints

Thanks. I already looked into the RV flange, but unfortunately the splines are much finer than the 1963 - (some) 1965. I didn't go further in seeing if the shaft OD and the flange OD where it rides on the seal are the same OD, but they look larger. It would have been a slick swap if everything...

TF 727 Push-button Output Hub Converting to U-Joints

Unfortunately, last year I saw the link you posted, but it has two issues in that it either has incorrect information or is for a smaller output flange. The yoke flange 2-2-349 that article lists has a bolt circle of 2.875" and an outside circle of 3.625, both far off the 727 output flanges I...

    [WANTED] Carter 4bbl parts search

Agreed. If the OP can source a 273 or 318 AFB, it'll be closer for tuning for sure. Good AFB cores are getting hard to find, at least in my experience, especially with alcohol-mix fuels that see water collecting in the accelerator-pump well and rotting it out. If the OP isn't constrained by a...

TF 727 Push-button Output Hub Converting to U-Joints

The issue I'm having is the 1964 push-button 727's fixed output flange yoke, which I picture below. I'm converting to a slip-yoke drive shaft that will require a flange yoke to bolt to the output flange. The bolt circle is 3.25", and the inside of the lip around the perimeter that creates a well...

    [WANTED] Carter 4bbl parts search

The choke pull-off on the parts carb was fried, but they can be purchased new from Mike's. I converted mine to manual choke. The 4299 would be a great carburetor for a 273 when properly tuned for the specific engine. It's a nice middle-ground 537 cfm as far as AFBs go, and jets are easy to...

[FOR SALE] For Sale: Factory RB 413 426 440 Intake Manifold 4 Barrel

I have a factory RB intake manifold for sale, casting 38300733, dated 5-25-1977. I find no damage to the intake, and the carburetor mounting threads look solid. Asking $75 plus shipping from Colorado (likely around $50 to the lower 48 states based off the last one I shipped a couple months ago)...

273 Rocker Arm to Shaft Clearance

First you bring up your inclination to eat fly crap rather than address the known feces in your meal and now you are expounding on expansion rates of cast iron. Neither the shaft nor the rocker arm is gray cast iron.

273 Rocker Arm to Shaft Clearance

Your comments about clearance in relationship to shaft diameter are partially why I posted, and, to be clear from my end understanding you weren't responding to me, I understood your suggestion of chroming to tighten the tolerance. The rocker shaft is a similar diameter as a piston wrist pin...

273 Rocker Arm to Shaft Clearance

Thanks. RAU will bush the rockers, true up the tips, and machine/chrome the shafts for about $400 after shipping both ways, so it's not a huge cost considering the thousands going into the rest of the build. However, if it's unnecessary, it's unnecessary. I agree that my instinct is to go ahead...

273 Rocker Arm to Shaft Clearance

Thanks. I've used Rocker Arms Unlimited before on A-block 318 rocker assemblies, and they would be the ones I'd send this 273 assembly to if it's warranted. Their bushed and chromed reconditioned assemblies are much tighter than this .003" clearance, which is partially why I asked my question in...

    cast iron water pumps

All modern water pumps for 1957 - 1969 A and LA engines I've purchased have the three threaded bosses, left-hand inlet, short snout. The last one I purchased I think I told the parts house 1965 Fury with a 318. 1970 went to aluminum, right-hand inlet, long snout.

273 Rocker Arm to Shaft Clearance

I've looked in five different factory and general service manuals spanning from 1957 (the LA273 shares a similar rocker arm as the A-block exhaust) to 1966 and cannot find any mention of or spec for rocker arm to shaft clearance. I have a pair of factory 1965 273 forged rocker arm assemblies...

TorqueFlite 727 904 Cut Bellhousing for Converter Bolt Access

Completely by coincidence while looking for a part in A & A Transmission's catalog, I ran across this interesting remark about their race-prepped 727 and 904 cases.

TorqueFlite 727 904 Cut Bellhousing for Converter Bolt Access

And according to multiple people in this thread who have utilized the notch modification for their specific 727/904 applications, the bellhousings don't crack and converter seals don't get destroyed from grit, especially if they built a cover for the notch.

TorqueFlite 727 904 Cut Bellhousing for Converter Bolt Access

Yeah, I didn't get that comment either. I've never seen a Chevy aluminum bellhousing with cracks through the housing other than race applications where the converter or flexplate came apart and busted the housing. I've had to TIG some with broken ears from morons torquing them down when the...

[Found!] TorqueFlite 727 4-friction Direct Drum

Does anyone have a good factory used (or new) 1971+ four-friction direct drum for a TF 727? I know I can find them online elsewhere but thought I'd ask here first. Thanks.

TorqueFlite 727 904 Cut Bellhousing for Converter Bolt Access

Nice photo. That's exactly the plate I was envisioning/trying to describe in my response to RustyRatRod above. Very clean. Did the notch in the bellhousing help at all?

TorqueFlite 727 904 Cut Bellhousing for Converter Bolt Access

I don't see myself doing the modification since I don't have an issue reaching the bolts with an offset wrench, but I could see bending up a 90° piece of sheet metal that covers the hole and covers the front hole of the dust shield, utilizing the cover bolts.

TorqueFlite 727 904 Cut Bellhousing for Converter Bolt Access

A search here and online didn't kick back anything, so I'm curious if anyone has made this modification and what people think. I ran across the photos with description in a Hot Rod article. According to the transmission builder, the hole for better access to the converter bolts does not impact...

How to Install a High Press Spring in a Small Block Oil Pump

I know this is an older technical article but still very informative. FYI for anyone interested in installing the high-pressure spring, the Mopar P369-0944 high-pressure spring kit no longer includes the plug. I received the kit last week, and it has a standard pressure and high pressure spring...

[WANTED] 1965 Small Block TorqueFlite Pushbutton 727 Transmission

My issue is that I have two good 1964 ball and trunnion pushbutton 727s, but that means I have to figure out how to have a suspension shop splice in a ball and trunnion into my driveshaft. I thought of swapping in a 1965 pushbutton slip-yoke output shaft and housing, if I can find one, but I'm...
