Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

My gasket set finally came in, along with my new lifters. Just finished slapping the heads on, and installing push rods. I set the intake on the motor just for looks, gave me a little inspiration. I’m excited to get it painted, it’ll be orange.

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Here are a couple pictures of the engine as it sits today, sorry I didn’t take more pictures along the way, I’ll try to be better about that! Crank, pistons, cam, and timing set are in!

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

I bought a set of Melling Factory Hydraulic Roller Lifters, JB-2225. I guess it won't hurt to have a backup set (the used ones).

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Great comment, I appreciate it! I think I did save the roller lifters, but just pulled the trigger on a new stock set of roller lifters. I thought it might be smart to replace them, rather than try to reuse the old ones with 144k miles on them... I can still cancel the order, what do you think...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

I'll measure it will calipers too, try to be as accurate as possible. Good information, I appreciate it! At that cost ($1140), knowing what you know about the importance of balancing a street engine, would you still have it balanced or run it as is and hope for the best?

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

The small local shop I got my block bored at doesn't have the capacity to balance... seems to be common around here in Alaska (not many machine shops around). They told me I didn't need to balance the rotating assembly with the new pistons if I'm not spinning it up to the 6500 rpm range...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Motor is back from the machine shop! Finally... I excitedly put it on the stand and got to work. First thing I did was check the main bearing clearances with plasti gauge, they all were right at .003". I've heard some say it's fine with that clearance, other sources say its too much... what are...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

I was lucky enough to find another machine shop to do some work to my block. I was fully planning on putting the motor together as is, however this family owned shop quoted me a price of $7-800 for all the work I mentioned above (minus crank balancing, all they can do in house is polish and mic...

1999 DODGE RAM 2500 COMP Cams 20-746-9 COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Camshafts | Summit Racing This is the cam I bought originally, its a little better than stock, but nothing crazy (from what I understand). The iron heads I have are ported some, will that help my situation? Thanks for the...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

They are KB107s, maybe I made a mistake by buying them? My cam isn't too extreme, what ways can I avoid detonation with these pistons? Aside from aluminum heads...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Look like there aren’t any cracks in the heads. So that was nice to confirm. Last night my pistons came in! Now I can take all my parts into the machine shop this week. Excited to get the ball rolling on that. There is something pretty cool about fresh speed parts!

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

That might be the thing to do, I could always find another motor later on and build it "right". For right now I'd just like to have it running well enough to have some fun with for a few years. As long as it doesn't have a god awful amount of blow by I would be pretty happy. I appreciate the...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Well I called my local machine shop... I was surprised what I was told. For the following... Cylinder boring Decking the block Cam bearing install (I provide bearings) Crank polishing Crank balanced to new pistons (I provide pistons) Hanging the new pistons on the rods it came out to $2090...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Thanks for the replies... Ill track down a bore gauge and double check it, but I have a feeling I already know what I will find. I can't believe that didn't catch my eye before I ordered my piston rings (first timer mistake I guess)... In some cases can the bore be cleaned up without needing to...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Finally back to working on the Barracuda after a summer of farming. I started to hone the cylinders yesterday only to find another issue. In 3 of the cylinders there are rough areas of wear. I’d say the rough areas are all located about 3/4 the way down cylinder wall. Is this from piston slap...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

If I could find a valve seat cutting tool, do you think that could solve my valve seat issue? Along with fresh exhaust valves of course. Trying to avoid the machine shop if possible and do what I can on my own. What happens if I keep lapping the valves until the pitting goes away? Would this...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Finally got around to lapping my valves. The larger valves are coming out great, but the smaller valves have some pitting. Is this common? The same issue can be seen on the valve seats too. It’s consistent on every set of valves.

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Thanks for the tips guys! I’ll be sure to check that out when I get a new pan. Today I worked on another one of my rigs (1970 International Pickup). But my valve springs, keepers, and retainers showed up in the mail! They look quite a bit beefier than the originals. Time to put the heads back...

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Well I got the oil pan cleaned up pretty well, just needs a good degreasing and I think I could throw some paint on it. However, am I wrong in thinking a late 1960s LA pan from a 273 will fit my Magnum? (The regular Magnum truck oil pan won’t fit my A-body). I thought I read that a modification...

More cleaning today, valves are all done (aside from lapping them), and the oil pan’s first scrubbing is done. Tomorrow I’ll hit the pan with a wire wheel and prep it for paint.

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

Cam bearings knocked out today and started cleaning valves. Questions: 1. I noticed some scoring in the block after knocking out the cam bearings. Is this something to worry about? The rear most bearing hole (I don’t know the actual term) was the most scared up. It’s in the picture below. 2...

Heads first round of cleaning is done. Got real familiar with my drill and wire wheel. Hosed everything down with break cleaner afterwords. Also, my cam bearing tool was delivered today! I’m going to do a little more reading on using the tool properly before I attempt to use it this weekend.

Could be! Definitely a lot of moisture around here, they where pretty rusted. Before I started pulling them I read in a thread that you can just twist them out with needle nose pliers lol. I felt like I needed the jaws of life on a couple of them.

Help with my first engine build (5.9 Magnum)

That’s a good call, I wouldn’t be surprised to find crack that I can’t see with my eye alone… Tonight I thought I’d take on the simple job of cleaning up the heads, but then realized I still had to remove the spark plug heat shields. In my mind it was a quick job before I got to the cleaning…...
