Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

Maybe the axle ratio would have to change. I’m working on a very similar build. If you pm me we can compare notes. I think my theory works on paper but hasn’t been proven yet

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

As far as the original question with out going to far off track. Aluminum heads are definitely better. Lighter and usually flow better with probably a little more compression. As far as everything else I couldn’t say. One thing I do know is that the cam your running isn’t fully utilizing

Installing headers -- While engine pulled or after re-installed?

The easiest I think is to pull the drive shaft, shifter, clutch linkage and cross member. Pull the engine and tranny together. If you’re working by yourself it would be harder to get everything lined back up for the engine and transmission to go back together. Especially working on the ground...

LD340 before and after porting numbers.

So the question I have is. The intake is capable of say 240 at .500 then the heads don’t need to be porting to much past that. Or if the heads are only capable of 240 will the intake cut the flow down regardless. Do you think you need a head flow of 260 something to make the intake flow a 240...

Speedmaster, Edelbrock, ProMax head question for you guys

I’ve always heard people say build the engine around the heads. In this case building the engine around the valves, is a possibility. A lot of people don’t have a chance to see a comparison like that. To test different valves to suit your needs. Both set of flow numbers would be appealing to...

    TF3 shift kit governor issue

You have to put the governor in a lathe and machine it down. I remember that, did one twenty years ago. Right under the valve you circled shows how to modify it. If your machine shop won’t do it. Find a gun smith they can take that down pretty easily

Looking for more pep off the line

I do agree with the cam swap but on a budget the trans and the tune would be first then some gears in the rear end, then definitely a cam. Some head work and an intake would be great to but as time and money allows eventually it will be a great car, your definitely getting good advise and...

Looking for more pep off the line

Could clean up valve body also before a full rebuild. If it’s not the governor and it’s not the valves, you have some leaky seals in the trans. But I would start with the tail shaft

Looking for more pep off the line

The governor on the transmission, it would b a place to start. Pull the tail shaft off and remove the governor and clean it up make shure it’s moving easily. And meybe adjust the bands. Put new fluid and filter in it. Do not flush it. All that does is break up varnish in the case that will plug...

    Windage Tray Height Location

The windage tray was put in the 340s to keep splashing oil of the the crank shaft in order to reduce friction. A lot like engine builders knifing the crank weights. The engineers rated the 340 for 6,000 rpm’s from factory. If decently serves a purpose. And the oil drain should be suffice for any...

Looking for more pep off the line

Might be on to something with the transmission, when I first put my 340 in my old car it was with a 727 the first test drive I was very disappointed with the take off, but it went really good down the road. It didn’t take long to find out the transmission was starting in second gear and only...

    Lend me your experience

First off any time you open an engine you better have a couple grand laying around, all the little stuff adds up. The 76 heads are smog heads, good heads in my opinion just have to plug the holes above the exhaust ports and do some porting. There’s a lot of meat In The bowls that can go but the...

    Watch who you argue with.

There is a lot of stupid people out there that’s for sure. But I turned forty a couple years ago and finally realized how stupid I used to be… and sometimes how stupid I can still be. Looking for help... Skilled trades...

Seems it’s all about money now days, and money ain’t worth anything anymore so you need a lot of it. In the trades traditionally you don’t make a lot of money. And the younger generation lacks pride for a job well done, those that do start there own buisness because that’s the only way to make...

    Compression ratio + hp?

Sounds like a good combo. I would think easily into the mid 300hp. Was there any porting done on the 596 heads? There’s a lot of meat left in the bowls on that casting, would really help to clean them up. Also did you plug the smog holes. The easiest way is a crack repair kit. There’s a proses...

    Here we go again

I’m no expert on head porting. And picture sometimes hard to decipher, over all looks like a lot of potential but I would never bolt them on out of the box the way they are. A lot like everything else now days they’re just kicking them out as fast as they can. Some one not knowing what there...
