check the simple things first, you said it seemed to be running ok, you need to seet the rings, keep an eye on the temp and take it on the road, get some running time on it, DO NOT LET IT IDLE FOR LONG PERIODS . i've seen people do this, it is not good on a fresh rebuid.

better yet, stroke it. the stroker kits are getting cheaper and the power you get for the money is worth it. just make sure you use a good set of heads,you will need them.
