Was the smoke coming from between the board and housing, somewhere between the temp and fuel gauge? Because if so you might have the same problem I did and the board isn't grounded.

Hopefully not, the fuel gage does move still when the key is on and drops with key off so it might be alright, but I am wondering about the temp gauge, I removed the wiring from the bulkhead connector to the sensor due to there being an aftermarket gauge on the car. I just bypassed the ammeter, I stacked wiring running in an out to one terminal. I'm also running a one wire alternator directly to the battery, so there alternator is no longer hooked up to the ammeter. The smoke is really really faint and I can smell it but I can tell where it's coming from...

Yeah, got the shackles straightened out and back to the correct position and now the ss springs are doing what they are supposed to.

Been a minute but I wanted to give an update, finally got around to picking up tires and test fitting my wheels, went with a 235 60 15. Fits great, I have about a half inch to the spring and a good 3/8 to the fender, and it fills up the fenders nicely.

It how people with ss springs have done it for the last 50 years, I'd say it's fine. I've done all the math on it as far as the angles and force generated and there is nothing wrong with how it's done.

Finally got some time to work on be car, got the spacers in and new shackles installed. After a through Shakedown and tightening the shackles up she's sitting right again. Now ive got to figure out what tires to throw on and I can button up the rear.

I am the original poster, and the reason I haven't just replaced the springs in question is I like how the car handles and sits, and I don't want to throw another 600+ dollars at something that only needs 15 bucks worth of aluminum to fix

My only concern with spacing the front spring mount is pushing the axle back the inch that I need to get everything in line, maybe I'm wrong but wouldn't that mean I'd have to lengthen the driveshaft and brake lines to match that extra inch?

I was thinking about making a spacer for the rear mount to push the top of the shackles over the eye of the spring, that seems to be the safest bet without messing up anything else.

So that's where it sits completely unsprung. When I jack the rear end up and flatten the spring out completely I can get it to almost 90 degrees but not quite 90, the bottom of the shackle is angled forward. Should I make a spacer for the shackle mount? All I would need is maybe 3/4 of an inch...
