How far in the hole 318 pistons

One thing to remember is that factory ratings were just that, ratings. Not actual measurements. 68 and 69 318s have an advertised 230 horsepower, and an advertised 9.25 ratio with open chamber heads. A 70 318 is still advertised as 230 horsepower, with an advertised 8.8 ratio. A 71 318 still...

I already have. Over the years, there have been times when a box of parts or something similar just shows up. Sometimes years later I still haven't learned where they come from. Generally, when the random things show up without my knowledge, I will wait a few months to see if someone comes back...

And a lot of things that are too good to junk, but not worth much. I was taught to not waste anything. But it has gotten to the point where I simply have far too much stuff. Therefore, it is not at all uncommon for me to give stuff away for free to people who show up here and actually have a...

Or a 40 year collection of Mopars and Mopar parts. When I bought the place, there was a 25 by 30 two story shop here already. I built on. Actually, did most of it myself before local building codes got too rough. Main posts are used utility poles, buried 4 foot in the ground and cemented in...

How far in the hole 318 pistons

I've never measured "down in the hole" height, but my favorite combination is a 1968 or 1969 shortblock, which had an advertised CR of 9.25:1 with open chamber heads, floating pins, and lighter weight rods than 71 up teens. Add a pair of the 302 casting heads, or a pair of 1967 273 or 318 heads...

Paint it, Clear it or Let It Rip?

Yes! I've done this for 30 years, but I'm cheap and just put a dab of RTV about three quarters of the way up from the bottom of the bolt. Nothing down where it counts on the threads as far as torque, but low enough that when the bolt rotates through the hole in the intake, it gets a good little...

    Small Blocks

70 Charger is fairly heavy. Depending on gearing, driver ability, and an infinite list of variables, lighter cars with just as much horsepower as a Hemi often ran mid to high 14s. Read some old magazine tests from back when the cars were new if you want some enlightenment.

How far in the hole 318 pistons

If you really want to find true compression ratio, you need to cc the combustion chambers and find the downfill volume of the cylinders. Production machining tolerances were sometimes very........ "tolerant", lol. Do a Google search on "half inch downfill volume of a cylinder" if you are...

    Small Blocks

DOHC Hemi heads for the 340, and internals capable of 10,000 rpm. You can't tell me that wouldn't be a fun thing to play with.

    Can you identify this motor?

Early 360 Magnums still used a non weighted flex plate, and had a single large weight on the converter. Not sure what year this changed but I know for certain 94 was still neutral flex plate weighted converter

Will a 77 Charger 360 fit in a 65 Valiant Slant Six Painlessly?

Not sure about early A bodies, but B and C cars received the splined output / slip yoke in 65. In those cars, 65 is a one year only trans, being slip yoke and cable shift.

Big unfinished space. Life issues came up, and I haven't gotten lights in the back half, or reliable heat, in it yet. But I'm slowly digging my life out of the pit I've been in.

    Harmonic Balancer 130ft/lbs on Stand

In the past, I've taken two long bolts that are the same thread as the flywheel bolts and threaded them into the crank flange. Wedge a long prybar between them and allow it to contact one of the "fingers" on the engine stand.

Sadly, when money was tight several years ago, I sold all 3 of them. A 68, a 72, and a low mileage 73. Haven't had the opportunity to pick any up CHEAP in the past 20 years.

To be honest, I love everything old school Mopar. But the 318 is my all time favorite engine, for exactly the reasons I've outlined. A mild cam, a set of closed chamber heads, and they are peppy enough for daily beater duty. I currently have 20 318s, a few 360s, half a dozen 383s, two 400s...

Nothing wrong with a good ol teen. A few tweaks, and good common sense, and you get a nice, efficient little mill that will just cry out to have more beatings unleashed upon it. Go ahead, spin it 6500. If it finally does decide to let go, a good core can be bought for 200 or less. Treat it to a...

Some time I get a little more free time, I'll have to look at numbers on a 1980 Volare cop 318 I have. I think I still have a 318 4bbl engine here too that came out of an 81 van. There's currently 20 318s on hand, just a matter of the memory not keeping up as well as it used to.

I have to respectfully disagree. Some early 80s production blocks used this casting number. Pad below the head, the letter immediately before 318 looks like a poorly stamped M, for the Mound Road engine plant. Check just above the oil pan rail on the passenger side towards the front. I bet...

    Oil pressure light flickering sometimes

50/50 blend of kerosene and ATF. Let idle till up to operating temp, then slowly bring revs up to around 1500 to 2000 for just a few seconds to "sling" the cocktail around inside valve covers, lifter valley, etc. Drain, refill, repeat. Two or three times and even the cruddiest engines get...
