How bad did I #$&% my piston up?

Ok, thank you very much for the response. You stated though that the second gap should be 25% larger than the first ring, so if my gap on the first ring is .026, I got .032 for the second gap if I did my math right. Am I mixing something up with your estimation? Thanks again.

How bad did I #$&% my piston up?

Not to resurrect old threads...but am I missing something with the bottom piston ring end gap? KB's site talks about the top ring gap, but I can't find anything for the second ring. Is it the same specs as the top ring? The build project took a backseat while I had other stuff going on, so...

Piston advice...please and general rebuild help

I notice that seems to be the most commonly referenced Lunati cam (the 403). Why is that, just out of curiosity? When I called Lunati's tech support and told them what I had/what I was trying to build, they recommended the 402, not the 403.

I could have very well misunderstood what he was saying too. I get confused with numbers flying around.

How bad did I #$&% my piston up?

Thanks! The paperwork for everything I got really doesn't explain a whole lot at all. The Sealed Power paperwork only touched on the oil ring expander and the retaining rings for top and bottom. All that stuff really said was to place the gap above the pin bore. However, the guy on the tech...

How bad did I #$&% my piston up?

Alright...so how exactly does the piston to wall clearance come into effect and what do I need to do regarding that? I apologize if I seem daft on this subject. Or is that something that the machine shop should have taken care of when they had the block/pistons? So I WILL need to use a file...

How bad did I #$&% my piston up?

This is why I admit to being a goon with this stuff and save myself from $3,000 of heart ache. Going back to that page for another read. Thank you, sometimes I just need to be smacked in the head like that.

How bad did I #$&% my piston up?

I have KB 232's in a .030 over bore. Now I'm starting to get confused, most likely because I'm reading too much into this. So I was told to use the formula of 4x4.000 for a standard four inch bore, or for my situation, 4 x 4.030 to determine the desired ring gap as the top ring sits inside the...

How bad did I #$&% my piston up?

Thanks guys, much appreciated. moper--they are in fact KB Hypers..I set the rings in the cylinders earlier before I set them on the pistons. They were all gapped at around .20 with my feeler gauge. If I understand correctly, then that gap is an acceptable amount for the cylinder, correct...

Whew, thank you. I thought I was f'ed. Funny thing is that these little bastards are easier to get on WITHOUT that bullshit tool.

How bad did I #$&% my piston up?

So I'm installing my piston rings with a ring spreader, and the spreader LIGHTLY scratched the surface of the piston. I tried to be as gentle/delicate as possible but the f'ing tool bumped into it as the ring popped out of the spreader. I can BARELY feel it if I run my finger nail along it...

A little progress this afternoon! All done and assembled now, just waiting for a second set of hands to help me set the crank in before these start getting popped in.

    Spark plugs

Just out of curiosity, what's all the excitement about these E3 diamond fire spark plugs? I keep hearing about them and see ads for them on various shows, but never once heard of them until this year.

And now some pictures to show a little bit of progress! Same block/oil pan from the previous photos. The block back from the machine shop all cleaned up, bored, magnafluxed and mic'ed. VERY happy with the machine work done by the East Side Portland NAPA store. With color! First engine...

    My 360 rebuild adventure.

I won't comment on the business name, but they are offering to take care of me and give me a credit towards business with them which goes a long way with me. Now maybe I can get those hard to find Dart letters for a good price in good condition. It kind of killed my mood at first, but now...

Thanks! I'm learning something new each day myself. I just ordered a couple of manuals on rebuilding small block Mopar engines to help me tackle this whole thing.

Update: I have my engine back! Pictures to come soon, but, here are the damages for the machine shop work so far. Block Prep/Magnaflux/Hot tank fees - $150.00 Reboring the cylinders to .030 over - $176.00 Crank Grinding - $99.33 Engine Balancing - $200.00 Cylinder head work (grinding, seats...

    Reusing a distributor?

I'll also get with my buddy who has a welder/welds things all the time and talk to him about this. I'm sure this would be something he could easily do for me to help me out. Thanks again.

    Reusing a distributor?

Awesome, thank you very much. I just went out into the garage to take a look at it. Turns out the marking on the distributor says '69' underneath the 318 mark. So I'm assuming this thing is good to go for what I need. It has the vacuum advance on the side of it as well. I pulled the cap off...

    Reusing a distributor?

Hi guys, My apologies if this has already came up once before. I tried searching the threads for a bit to potentially answer my own question but I was unable to find anything. I have the original distributor sitting on my garage floor right now from my '79 LA 360 E58. The engine ran and...

    motor mount question.

As a matter of fact I have that exact set of motor mounts sitting on my garage floor right now. I'm going to have to end up buying a slant six to small block motor mount set from Schumacher before too long, so I don't see myself needing this set for anything anytime soon.

    motor mount question.

Hi Bill, I have no idea if these pictures will help you or not (or if it's what you're looking for), but this 360 of mine was pulled out of a '79 Chrysler 300 and these are the mounts that were on the engine as it was pulled out. Hope they help. Sorry about the filth, these were taken...

    My 360 rebuild adventure.

So a couple random thoughts here.. On the subject of rocker arms--is there anything wrong with cleaning up and using the stock rocker arms/bar in this engine? I would guess that there's no benefit in going out and buying aluminum rocker arms for this setup when I'm already using stock cast...
