It's a vacuum hose from the manifold. usually it goes to the power brake booster but if it's not needed in your case, plug it or put a plug in the manifold or you will have a heck of a vacuum leak.

I forgot I knew that about the 318 balancers. Thanks. I have two "'71" 340's lying around and both have forged cranks in them. I am almost sure they were both in '72 cars, but I haven't verified this by the VIN yet.

So are the balancers off a forged crank 318, such as a 69 or 70 the same as the early 340's? What year did they begin using the cast crank on the 340? 71 or 72?
