Timing or carb problem? Not sure.

Well at least I'm glad to hear it's most likely timing. Glenn

Timing or carb problem? Not sure.

Trying to get my '65 Dart running. Pulled distributor and found gear broken in half. Replaced distributor. When I try and start it am having 'blow back' or gas spraying back out the carb (backfire?). With a friend's help we did clean out the Holley one barrel and replaced some parts on it...

    Smoking ballast resistor ain't a good sign...huh?

The car started to run rough after I added some gas to the tank. The fuel gauge wasn't working then so I added 4 gallons of gas. Well that just stirred up the crap that had settled in the bottom of the tank. Car has been sitting for 4 years the previous owners told me. Well after doing some...

    Smoking ballast resistor ain't a good sign...huh?

There's a post somewheres about 'not starting'. Anyways the engine just isn't 'catching'. Turns over very well. I thing it's timing issue (I hope). Anyways the gas side of the equation is been taken care of. New tank to replace old rusty one, new sending unit, new fuel line from tank to fuel...

    Smoking ballast resistor ain't a good sign...huh?

Couple days ago I spent $5 at Oreilly's and bought a new ballast resistor for my '65 Dart. While trying to get the Dart started today, still working on timing, smoke started to come up from the resistor. Took it off and out the old one back on and continued trying to get the Dart started. Guess...

What does the timing mark on my '65 Dart...

....look like? I have a slant six 225cid. Had to replace the old distributor with a new one. Now I have to attempt to find TDC. Was wondering if the timing mark on the harmonic balancer is a machined indentation or a groove or what? What should I look for? Glenn

    No start on '65 Dart...

This 'piston stop' helps you find when the number one cylinder is at the top of the stroke and/or cylinder? This way when I set the gap in the points the distributor isn't sending a spark when the piston is at the bottom of the cylinder? Right? So once I place the 'stop' in the number one...

I have a service manual and a timing light. What's a 'piston stop'? Glenn

    No start on '65 Dart...

Pulled distributor (dizzy as some call it) today. Here's some pictures of what I found. As you can see only half the gear at the bottom came out. So the other half is still in the engine. Is this fatal? Can I get the other half out by removing the oil pan? Can I put another dizzy in and run...

    No start on '65 Dart...

I can get the cap off, remove the points and condenser. What do I do next to remove the rest of the distributor? Glenn

    No start on '65 Dart...

The engine is a 225cid slant six. I guess I thought that I would see the distributor shaft spin if I had someone, my son, turning the ignition key like he was trying to start it. Glenn.

    No start on '65 Dart...

I checked the ballast resistor. I took one prong of my multimeter and held it against one of the metal tabs extending from the ballast resistor. The other multimeter prong I pushed it into the plug that slid over the metal tab. With the ignition key on and my multimeter set at 20 on the DCV side...

    No start on '65 Dart...

Timing chain...thank you. Have had 2 people in the last month look at this and tell me there's 'good' spark'. I was sitting in car operating ignition switch so I actually didn't see spark. But being newish to this I wouldn't know the difference between good and not so good spark. Is this the...

    No start on '65 Dart...

Newbie to this ignition deal! '65 Dart not starting. Turns over very well. Will not catch. So I thought maybe I'd start with new points/condenser. Got new points and condenser today and installed them. Went to set gap. My distributor shaft isn't turning at all. Won't the shaft turn even if...

No start. Work the problem with your help!

There's fuel to the carb. I have a slant 6. Should check for spark. Pull plug and re-connect to wire and hold it near wheel well and see if there's a spark? Glenn

No start. Work the problem with your help!

In August I bought a '65 Dart. Owners said it had been sitting for last 4 years. It would start right up then. In mid-September on way home from brake shop it started running very rough, but I got home. Next day would turn over but not catch. After some checking I discovered gas had gone bad and...

Which one is the #1 plug? I dunno?

So my 1965 Dart has the large slant six. So which spark plug is considered the number 1 plug? The plug nearest the radiator and fan? Or at the other end of the block, the plug nearest the firewall? Am not sure. Glenn

Been too long! How do I remove a burnt out turn signal bulb?

The bad light bulb is out and a new one is in! Thanks to mopardude318 and monook! Knowing the correct direction to get the bulb out was really very helpful (thanks monook)! Glenn:D

Been too long! How do I remove a burnt out turn signal bulb?

The left front turn signal on my '65 Dart doesn't work. The other three blink quite nicely. So I figure a burnt out bulb. I remove the amber lense and try to remove the old bulb. But nothing is happening. If I recall right these old style bulbs don't screw in or out. There's a trick to them...

    Tachometers for dummies!

I problem I see with a tach like 73AbodEE's is will it register below the 1000rpm mark once the engine starts? His looks to be 'stuck' at 1000 rpm. The idle speed for my 225 slant 6 is 500 rpm I believe. So if a 'stuck' tach won't register at low rpm's it wouldn't do much good. Of course you...

    Tachometers for dummies!

I get those bogus readings sometimes on some of the transit buses I drive. I love seeing the speedometer registering 20mph and the bus is stopped, with the engine off! Glenn (good point made about possible lack of quality)

    Tachometers for dummies!

Would like a add a tachometer to my '65 Dart. The previous owner added a 'Sunpro' oil pressure gauge, which is mounted on the bottom of the dashboard. Is 'Sunpro' a decent brand? I don't want to spend a boatload of money on this. And yes, this is all new to me! Any thoughts? Glenn

Would a '65 have a fusable link? The car looks fairly stock. Just wondering if a link was being used in 1965? Glenn

    No headlights...

This is dark blue 65 Dart. I don't think it was on Craigslist for very long. When I came across it the first time it was listed for $2700.00. The owners thought they had a sale at $2700. Apparently the buyer backed out. Then a death in the family kept them busy. About one month later they...

Will give it a shot in the morning then! Thanks for the help! I actually have a wiring diagram for this Dart. Glad I found it. Glenn
