That is the correct socket. What I did years ago ( pre internet ) was to take a Craftsman 1 3/4 3/4 drive socket I had and ground out 4 points of the socket inside using a die grinder and made a socket to fit the ball joint. Back then only Snap On made the correct socket.

This statement worries me you do understand that the upper ball joints unscrew from the control arm correct ? They are NOT pressed in as in needing a ball Joint press.

I would check all wheel bearings

Recheck the wheel bearings. Jack it up and grab the tire top and bottom and see if there is any play in the bearings also check the lug nuts while your at it. Don't drive this at any speed until you find and fix the problem. Also if you can't find the problem yourself please pay someone who can.

Make sure the lower ball joint bolts are turned the right way as the head of these bolts are what hits the steering stops if you put the bolts in backwards they will hit sooner limiting the steering.
