    Strange looks like a 903 but it has 3 synchronizers note the flat cover with no hump to clear the input shaft gear which would signify a 745 3 speed maybe it's not Mopar. I have seen the Orion name on Ford Transmissions.

    Being you have no transmission to start with I would go with the 230 but it will also require a driveshaft because 65 still has a ball and trunnion drive shaft.     It's a 745 note the bump in the top cover, basically a heavier duty 3 speed. It also has the stud for a shift interlock mainly seen on taxi's of the era.

    What did you use for a bell housing? Your choice of bell housing most likely messed up your clutch linkage geometry. The best choice would have been a 64 slant 6 4 speed bell housing.

    They used to make universal 3 spd floor shifters that would work with a 903 maybe you could search the internet and find one. Me I would fix the column shifter.

    Sounds like a weak second gear syncro you may also need the main shaft second gear because the engagement teeth may be worn may as well put a bearing, seal and gasket kit in it.

    Even the bell housing pattern is different between an A903 and a A230. But hell yea by the early 70s you could get a A230 with a slant. I doubt they offered both at the same time for very long.
