    Yet another dipstick thread! Yay!

I have a 74 Dart Custom. In July I swapped in a low-mileage (44K) /6 (from a '71) for the dead original. There were no issues. Changed the oil & filter twice in the first week (donor motor had sat for a while) and checked the oil each time. I;ve checked the oil a dozen times or more...

Screaming belt after switching out the alternator

Exactly the same thing happened tome a week ago. Bought a new alternator from Autozone, put it on, screaming, smoking belts, etc. Took the belt off, alt was frozen solid. Took it back the next day...it spun fine. Put it on the tester, it spun for two minutes, but read FAIL. Replaced under...

    Vibration??

It's not a vacuum leak, I checked for those after installing the manifold. The motor has a dead-smooth idle at 750RPM, the rest of the car vibrates as though the motor was welded to the frame (it has new motor & trans mounts). The real fun starts on hard acceleration. It appears that the 904...

    Vibration??

Well, replaced the motor over the course of the past week. Motor runs great; very smooth. I still however have: -- vibration at idle (even after setting the timing and the RPMs to spec.) once dropped into any gear. -- hard shudder on hard acceleration, and very hard shifts. During...

I think my 225 is toast

A lot has happened over the past two weeks. Last Saturday, acquired a motor & trans from member ms2420 Thanks, man. Pulled the old motor Changed out for this low-mileage '71: changed the trans fluid & filter some crud located and cleaned Motor started right up after a...

I think my 225 is toast

The car is remarkably solid & rust-free, a sprinkling of small rust holes on the surface of both lower rear quarters, some light surface rust in the trunk, but none anywhere else.... the right anchor for the trunk torsion bars is bent, I was going to straighten & then stiffen it with a piece of...

I think my 225 is toast

^^^ Good god. I thought my neighbor (a retired racecar mechanic named Stan Butler; may he rest in peace) was hardcore for making a head gasket out of a grocery bag ^^^ If I can find a very cheap (or free) 225, I promise to open up this one & post the results.

I think my 225 is toast

Oh god you ain't kidding. I've had nearly thirty cars since I was 15...my first car was $150 and had the head & bits in the trunk. After college I owned at least two at once (and as many as five) in case one died. Never paid more than $300 for a car that wasn't a ragtop. My '74 Fury III had...

I think my 225 is toast

I don't disagree...except that it didn't rattle on the other five when pulled. Plus I pulled the starter & manually checked all four bolts. :)

I think my 225 is toast

I thought about that & read the manual (which says, oddly, to jack the motor from the left front corner of the pan...and then unbolt & remove the pan! Nice trick!). I figure by the time I open it up & buy a set of rod bearings for $120 I'll find the crank journal lunched. Then, there'd be no...

I think my 225 is toast

Already checked those. Rod bearing issue = confirmed.

I think my 225 is toast

Sirs (or ladies, as the case may be): You are well-acquainted with your fecal matter. Pulled #6, no change. As soon as I pulled #5, I heard the knock, softly, at idle. Engine rev: nothing. Checked the rest just to be sure, they're fine (for the moment) It will be cheaper to change out the...

I think my 225 is toast

74 Dart 225 Motor noise - YouTube Bought the car two weeks ago. Has approx 160K on it. When I run it on the highway, it makes a jackhammering sound from under the hood. The knock stays for a couple of minutes after a highway run, then fades away. As you can see from the video, it's a pretty...

Slant 6 225 anyone want it

Since the motor in my '74 Dart appears to be toast, I do have a need. (edit) confirmed bad rod bearing on #5. :(

    Vibration??

Arg. Sounds like a rod knock. :( Took it out on 295 & opened it up to about 70. Sounded like someone was jackhammering under the hood. When I parked it in the driveway, heard a nice knock at idle. Sounds like a rod knock...although there's no vibration at speed, and the knock quieted down...

    Vibration??

Today's work produced zero results -- set timing (found a problem*) -- re-gapped valves (did them hot this time) --set idle to 750-RPM -- checked vacuum (forget the number, but it was steady, with a very slight flutter) -- replaced the tranny tail mount (note: test the crossbolt in the mounts...

    Vibration??

Been through all of the hoses & replaced the PCV valve. Pulled each hose one at a time & capped the barb at the carb. Closed the choke slowly, no increase in idle until it died. Finally, emptied a can of carb cleaner all over everything; no change. Motor actually idles well and even, as noted...

    Vibration??

I have to put it on a tach tomorrow, & check the timing...be surprised if I find anything. It sounds like a mellow valve knock when I blip the throttle hard. I hear it coming from the motor, from under the hood when I'm hand-throttling it. Car does NOT knock under load...or at least, it...

    Vibration??

Don't mean to push the thread up but I am having a similar issue. I just acquired a '74 Dart Custom 4-door with a 225 (160K miles) and it starts and runs in P/N just fine (it's blowing some oil into the air cleaner, but that appears to be an unrelated issue) Plugs are all a nice brown, and...
