Please don't rip me a new one, but....

I watched him make a run. That thing was wild. Couldn't get it shut down quick enough, and ended up in the woods at the end of the track. Salem, Mo. '71/'72. There's a '72 Duster in the for sale section that would make a nice candidate.

Valvoline VR-1 vs. Lucas Hot Rod oil

I don't drive mine enough to change by mileage, so I change it out every spring. I've been running Valvoline conventional oil in everything I've had since 1970, except for the newer vehicles that use synthetic. I use 10w30 Valvoline and a bottle of Lucas ZDDP treatment, been working so far.

    72 + 340 motor

My '72 340, steel crank motor has a '71 date code. If I remember right, it's September, but not positive. It came out of a '72 Duster. It was an early production car. The cast crank motors will have a '72 date code on them, beginning in April.

    72 + 340 motor

From Allpar. "a forged steel crank (through 1972’s engine #39118000, when a cast iron crank was used)" "The crankshaft was switched from forged to cast somewhere in the production cycle, believed to be in early April 1972, with engine 39118000 (thanks, Karl Thomas); a milder camshaft was used"

    72 + 340 motor

Early '72 340's were steel crank, neutral balance. ( I have one )Later were cast crank, external balance. You need to know witch one you have. I think some time in April is when they changed.

How many horsepower was my car born with?

If I remember correctly, 1971-1972 went from 230 hp to 150 hp. Compression ratio was the same 8.6-1. All in how it was calculated. My ‘72 Duster ran heads up or beat several ‘71’s.

    273/4 -318 debate

It looks to me like some of those ratings are pre 72, and some post 72. In 1972, hp rating went from gross to net. Also, compression ratings were reduced on most high performance engines.

    273/4 -318 debate

"The 74 4bbl 360 had all the 340 stuff on it from the previous year. All of it including the same advertised compression ratio. So now, there it sits blazing out in 245 hp glory, while the 340 sits at minimum 275. How does 20 cubes less make 30 hp more, wearing all the same parts." '72 and '73...

    273/4 -318 debate

My '72 motor is forged. They started out with a steel crank, but changed sometime mid year. Most LA 318's were cast crank.

318 tear down... it’s about time.

Not positive, but I believe, with the exception of some truck motors, 318's had cast cranks.

318 tear down... it’s about time.

My guess on the 273 crank, is to get a forged crank. Still the same stroke though.

I'll be following this. I have an '86 318 cop motor, I'm thinking of doing the same thing with.

And so it starts... 340 build

But we know it will be done right. Ready to watch a master at work.

The 340 is the biggest POS V8 Chrysler ever made.

I’m one of those older guys. I also know a lot can be done to any of the LA engines to make them run, same as the small block Chevy’s and Fords. They’re all good.

The 340 is the biggest POS V8 Chrysler ever made.

This is an A-Body sight. Almost all A-Body Mopars came with a small block or a slant six. There were a few exceptions. (very few) I have no problem with someone dropping a big block in, but that's no excuse for coming on here and ranting about 340's, or any other small block motor. Amazing...

Ran my '72 Duster side by side with my buddie's Charger SE at 130 mph. Mine was done, his wasn't.

The 340 is the biggest POS V8 Chrysler ever made.

My older brother bought a '67 GTO. First day he had it, guy with a 375 hose SS396 Chevelle was giving him a hard time about it. Challenged him, and got spanked. That GTO didn't beat the SS, the driver did. After that, when that SS went to the track, Charlie went along as the driver.

Back in the 60's and 70's I saw many 283/292/301's at the track tearing stuff up. One of the first engines available from the factory with 1 HP per CI. By the way, I have one in my shop for a someday project.

Do I really need a stroker?

The man said he could afford it, just hesitant about doing it. (Me too.) If you build it, you will enjoy it. You also can also add quite a bit of power to the stock stroke, for less money, and still enjoy it. Your decision.

    1972 Demon 340 engine mods

Check you balancer on that crank. They changed in '72. Pretty sure by August it will be cast. My '72 is a steel crank, but it was built late in '71. According to Allpar they changed in April

    340 hp capabilities?

Not as much an expert as many on here, and not to be one of "those guys", but I personally would use the 360. Lots of 360 blocks to play with, and fewer and fewer 340's, only reason.

    Whats the deal with 340s?

340's were one of the few motors produced strictly for performance. They didn't produce them in any other version. '67-8-9 Z28 302's also come to mind.
