First time having manual brakes, are mine bad?

I love manual brakes on older cars. I have manual brakes on most my classic cars including our '77 van. It's one conversion I always try to do. Yes, it takes a little more "leg", but by all means, you shouldn't be standing on the pedal. My wife can drive any of our cars and stop them on a...

Yep, I do it to almost every old mopar I can, including some of my current cars. Means I am doing it, it means I like manual brakes.

    Driving with parking brake engaged

My first date (with now my wife) I drove to the neighboring town with the parking brake on in my '86 Carrol Shelby Daytona Turbo Z 5 speed. No harm done.... but I was upset with myself. ..... my, where does time go, that would have been almost 30 years ago...

    my manual brake experience

I go to manual brakes when I can. I use the power disc master cylinder. Adds a little more stroke but you don't have to push as hard.

    Backin Plates...

If a guy has a small bolt pattern 7.25, it may be different. I just literally tried it about 2 weeks ago on my '74 Duster. It has SBP, and the holes in the 7.25 backing plates were off, even if I would have drilled the 5th hole. Also, I would have had to drill the drum, or get a drum that...

    Backin Plates...

I've used 8.25 rear end backing plates on my last two rear end swaps, going from 8.25 to 8.75. Some have used backing plates from the 7.25, but you'll need to drill holes.

    Manual disc brakes, master cyl?

I've used both "power brake master cylinder" and the "manual brake master cylinder". Both worked great. Difference is, the power MC pushes easier to stop but has more pedal travel.

    Power to Manual conversion questions

I've done this several times on Dusters/Darts. The only mod I do is get a manual brake push rod. I use the same master cylinder. Granted, these weren't '67's.

disk swap on '74 or keep drums?

Drums can be ok, but in heavy "stop and go traffic" can heat up, then you loose your brakes. Also, if you brake quickly from a higher speed, they generate heat loosing stopping ability. If this type of driving doesn't apply to you, then you can rebuild your drums.

    Master Cylinder

thanks, I will use the master cylinder I have. Power brake master cylinders are the smaller diameter, which should make for easier pushing, maybe a little further travel. Haven't tried to re-use the master cylinder before, but I will on this one. Oh, yes, I will plug the vacuum..... lol

    Master Cylinder

Putting manual brakes on a '76 Duster in place of power brakes. Question is, will the power brake master cylinder the car currently has work for manual brakes? I've done power to manual brakes before, but I've bought the master cylinder for the pushrod I was using. Or do I need to buy a...
