    just rebuilt runs bad

possibly 180 out. If the distributor was dropped in with timing marks pointing at each other then it was at TDC for #6 cylinder. Has happened before.

Did you do a leakdown check? That might tell you more.

checking for cracked head or bad head gasket..

I'm not sure what the spec is on the gap on the intake runners. I know on mine it was about an 1/8" to 3/16" with an eddie air gap. I's sure they vary depending engine specs and mods. I think it's more important to make sure there is a gap so the intake is mating to the heads and not bieng help...

checking for cracked head or bad head gasket..

I'm with Joedust, you need to test fit the intake. Put the gaskets in and lay the intake on and check the end gaps with a feeler gauge. There should be pretty good size gap at the end runners with no cork gasket or rtv.If the gaps aren't there then it would cause sealing issues.

checking for cracked head or bad head gasket..

You may not see a trail I had one leaking and thought it was a freeze plug also. Only way I could tell was by feel.

checking for cracked head or bad head gasket..

It may be the exhaust bolts leaking if it's the rear corners of the pan.I believe it is the rear most exhaust manifold bolt holes that are threaded into the water jackets. Just a thought.

    milling 360 heads

Get a good cc first if you don't know the history on the heads. You may end up with 49cc heads like I did:)

    Magnum heads

From what I have researched about the retrofit roller lifters the problem with the low oil pressure comes from the block itself. Hughes has a good example of the different lifter bores found on the LA smallblocks. I talked to hughes and they told me that all the blocks will work, you just have...

    What do you guys think?

Is he running slicks? Does he use a pinion snubber? I would think it should run in the 12.5 to 13.0 range with the proper hookup and 60ft times. I may be smoking crack too:) I always over estimate my mods:( oops just saw the snubber.... is he setting it up about a 1/4" from the contact point?

    desperatly need engine help

are you sure the rings are shot? Since it was never started the rings may not be seated properly. If it was rebuilt you should be able to pull a few bearing caps to see if it has new bearings , the cylinders should also be easily identified as being cleaned up. Did your friend come out and tell...

    desperatly need engine help

Demonseed is spot on with his diagnosis. If the cam was installed wrong which is a relatively easy part of the build then what else is wrong? I know it's alot of work to tear down an engine and check your builders work but, it sure is better than dropping it in and ruining it because something...

    desperatly need engine help

If the cam was in wrong and you bent pushrods there is a good chance the pushrods were bent when the valves hit the pistons. You said it's running kinda "funky".

    desperatly need engine help

just a reminder to help you out. I would pull all the plugs and rotate the engine by hand while watching the valve train once everything is assembled. If you see or feel any binding then something is still wrong. It concerns me that you bent pushrods and the engine hasn't even been started yet...

LOL dotch, Glad to see there are some people with a sense of humor. I've been down the bent pushrod road and it can be frustrating at times.

    desperatly need engine help

I don't think bent pushrods can be fixed. Once they are bent they are kind of useless. I would get the engine setup correctly first and then go back to figuring out what went wrong.

Skycuda, If the cam was put in with both dots lined up to each other then your on the wrong stroke. That is only if the distributor was dropped in pointing at #1 with both dots lined up. When you line the dots up together you are tdc on the number 6 piston of the compression stroke. . It's an...

    318 with "special" j heads?

Rumble, I posted above it was achieved with aftermarket pistons on the 360 and no block machining was done. I got the numbers from the 318 and it looks like it will be sitting at 10.33:1 static compression using the thin .028 mopar gaskets. I'm not sure how the engine will react to the larger...

    318 with "special" j heads?

the 360 zero deck was achieved with after market pistons. Ther was no machining to either block. I hope I'm using the right term when I say zero deck. I assumed it meant your pistons are level with the deck.

    318 with "special" j heads?

LOL, I forgot the cam size, I know it's aftermarket, crane or comp. I believe it advertised for 1500 to 6000 rpm and it's definately under 500 lift. stock converter and 3.23 gears.

    318 with "special" j heads?

thanks rumble. I will get the gasket dimensions and piston depth tonight or tomorrow. I just want to make sure it's a workable solution for my son in law. He is getting ready to inherit my 70 swinger as his first project. He "plans" on building a 340 or360 for it in the future but needs...

    318 with "special" j heads?

I have a rebuilt stock bottom end 318 with flat top pistons. Pistons sit in in the hole a little and I'm going to measure for exact. My question is: I have a matching set of 360 j heads 1.88/1.6 valves that were milled to 49cc chambers. I ran them on my 360 for awhile but it was too much...

    test/tune/confussed

Are you sure you have full throttle engagement with the gas pedal? You may only be using 3/4 of the linkage. Have someone mash the pedal down and make sure the carb is opening all the the way. Very simple check that makes alot of difference if it's off. p.s. make sure you leave the...

67fish, sorry for hijacking your thread, There is no question that for an auto trans a body the TTI headers are the best you can buy right now hands down.

    best headers??

I've always liked the 2nd gen camaro also. I had one back in the early 80's. It was black with red pin striping. Across the rear trunk flair was air brushed " the terminator" It actually ran pretty good with the 350 and a young kid that new squat about cars. It was the only true muscle car I...

    best headers??

360z you need to get some badges that mimmick the datsun 280z. I'm also a little confused. Do you like the mopar engines that much or do you like the Camaro body style that much?

    best headers??

360z28 is actually the future. With chevy and Dodge merging I would bet that the new Camaro will be fitted with the 392 hemi.

Do I need a new mechanic?

Did the weiand you where running have the small 318 ports? I would think the velocity would be the same or better since your not going from the small intake runners and then trying to "fill" the larger runners on the 360 heads. The RPM is a much better match for the 360 heads IMO.
