    anybody know about 2-post hoists?

I bought a Bendpak 4 post lift 12 years ago, glad I did. We had Rotary 2 and 4 post lifts at work, definitely a quality product. I think my Bendpak was a copy of the Rotary. Picked it up at the truck freight terminal, unloaded it with my cherry picker and a gantry crane, then used them to set...

    Wilton vise

I have one like the OP shows but mine is a swivel base. Got it new about 1980 for $150. Today the same model is about $600. It wouldn't surprise me if they get their base model vises from China, but I believe the top of the line units are still built here, in Franklin Park, Ill. There is a...

    New garage-floor covering....

In '04 I added on to my garage to have more storage and a spot for a lift. While the floor was still fresh and new I got a U-coat-it kit and did the floor. 14 years later the floor still is good, has never chipped or lifted. I have done everything and anything in there, spilled oil, atf...

    Shop Heat

Having insulation in the ceiling is more important than the walls. I found this out through practical experience a long time ago. The walls were done, but the heater ran nonstop struggling to keep the temps up. After insulating the ceiling it would cycle on and off, easily keeping the temps up...

    redneck tools for the hobbyist

Put the flat side of the spacer against the seal and start tapping on it. Since the OD of the spacer is larger than the OD of the hub it will seat the seal flush with the hub. I've also used a piece of aluminum round stock to do it, just as long as the OD of the piece is larger than the hub OD.

    2 Post lift

I bought a Bend Pak 4 post 12K 10 years ago, glad I got it. While some jobs are a little more difficult to do on it than they would be on a 2 post I have been able to do anything I've wanted to do, including swapping a rear axle and springs and redoing front suspension. I was lucky that I got...

building pole barns in the sky

When I moved here 25 years ago I put up a 1200 sq. ft. building, the maximum allowed. It has a slightly odd shape to deal with setback from the road issues. After ten years I wanted a lift, but ceilings are only 9.5 ft. So to build any more I had to apply for a double zoning variance. Cost me...

Full Custom Garage, why I like it

I think it's one of the best car shows going. It's been on for a couple years now. He does some real interesting stuff, way out of the mainstream. He is good at visualizing something and has the skills to make it happen. Some of his shop equipment looks homemade, but works real well. He is good...

    Tig welders - discuss

I learned MIG and TIG at work long ago. It took a while, but I got quite proficient at both. One thing that helped with the TIG was that I learned to weld with a gas torch back in high school so I already had the hand motions down pat. I did both mild and stainless steel at work, not much...

put my new lift in yesterday

Lifts are a wonderful thing, especially as you get older. Not only do they make jobs easier but faster as well. To take full advantage of what a lift can do for you a ceiling height of 12 ft. is needed.

    Craigslist tool chest find

Real good find. The old ones are built a lot sturdier than the new ones. Better drawer slides too.

    Best garage floor paint?????

I applied Ucoat on a new garage floor back in 04. It has held up very well, no problems with it. I have spilled all different kinds of liquids and nothing has fazed it. They give you a container of silica sand to sprinkle on the 1st coat while it is still wet if you want a non-skid surface...

    Finishing interior garage walls

I put up masonite, also called hardboard, that had a glossy white coating on it that wipes off easy and is super reflective. It's 1/8 in. thick, I used my electric staple gun with little T-head nails to fasten it up. It comes in 4x8 sheets and cost about the same as a 4x8 sheet of 1/2 in. drywall.
