If the valve stems were bent would he have low numbers on a compression test or is it possible that the valves still seat good?

If your carb is good and your distributor is in good working order then I would check the valve springs

Is the carb in good shape?

What is your vaccume at an idle?

I don't blame ya for picking up the carb for 20 but I think it's a little big

I agree with moper. this is what I did on my dart and it has worked fine for me

x2 tune up and rebuild carb should do wonders.... also with a bad exhaust leak, sometimes the engine is really running better than it sounds

i would go with the 318 but I hate to see the 273 get crushed because their getting harder and harder to find. there shouldnt be much weight difference. that is aweful high on a 273 that probably needs rebuilt

if you have power to your coil you might have your distribuitor turned backwards where it is firing on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke.
