    Popping thru carb when starting

This could be many things, but I think more likely electrical [ ign ]. If points ign, check gap. Check dist cap & rotor for cracks, arcing. If elec ign, check p/up air gap. No gap or too big a gap can cause backfires. If the vac adv is used, after high mileage the p/up wires break from constant...

    Coil Question

First, You must test the coil resistance with a DVM the ign off [ no power to the coil ]. If it reads open cct under this condition, then the coil is bad. Touch the meter leads together to make sure the meter goes to zero or close to zero [ meter is working ]. Secondly, you will not get an...

Turk, After reading your post #68, I have to admit I got it wrong in post #67. You are not just dumb, you are really dumb... Not only dumb, but cannot read either....... Not that it is any of your business, but I am on more Chrys forums than GM forums. Might be hard for you to...

Yes, master. Your bullshit has been noted. If I posted my results, you would claim they are unsubstantiated...& where is the proof. So I post results from respected people, known to thousands..... Where is YOUR proof that HEI is not better than a Chrys ECU??????????????? You are just so...

With a magnetic trigger, the spark retards at higher rpms due to distortion of the flux wave created by the trigger.

    Electronic ignition upgrade.

Phil Jacobs, founder of Jacobs ign systems, wrote a very good book called Performance Ign Systems. I have not used his systems, but those that have generally have positive comments such as better mileage & power. The Chrys ign system did not fare well in his ign comparison, especially compared...

    Electronic ignition upgrade.

Rymor, Take no notice of Newbomb Turk & his superb ignorance. If he actually knew anything about ign, he would know that HEI is an improvement. Look at FACTS. [1] Over the decades, spark plug gaps have increased. Why? Because the greater exposure of the mixture to the bigger spark is more...

    Electronic ignition upgrade.

The HEI upgrade is a very good upgrade for a number of reasons. You should use an E core coil [ such as MSD #8207 or similar ] to get the best out of it, as they produce more spark energy. - HEI has variable dwell, Chrys ECU doesn't. Important for high-er rpm operation - variable dwell keeps...

1974 Dart 318 crank, but no start (Solved)

[1] Remove dist cap & crank engine to make sure rotor rotates. Check rotor for carbon tracking. [2] Dist rotates. Remove dist, but first note position. Measure from vac adv nipple to f/wall or similar; note where rotor points. Connect DVM to dist p/up wires, select AC volts. Depending on how...

3 ohm vs 1.5 ohm ignition coil

Do not know 4/6 cyl would have such high resistance; but here is something to think about..... The power [ watts ] developed in the primary resistance is transferred to the secondary winding to produce spark energy. The formula for power is voltage squared divided by resistance. So when...

    Hooking up my ignition ...

The only thing Super about the Accel super coil is the price. You were paying extra for a pretty ordinary coil dressed up to look impressive. The Hyfire is a CD ign system. To get the best out of it, you should use an E core coil & better still, an E core coil designed for CD such as the MSD 8252.

3 ohm vs 1.5 ohm ignition coil

Any ign system that uses a coil with a 3 ohm primary resistance is going to have low-ered spark energy. The GM HEI system replaced a points & bal res system in GM cars that had very similar characteristics to the Mopar points system. The HEI with it's 0.6 ohm coil produces 85% more spark energy...

    MSD or Blue Streak wires?

Check EVERYTHING. I recently finished an engine build where the owner bought the MSD plug wire kit, where you cut to length to suit your engine. They come with spark plug end already terminated. One wire had high resistance because the wire & the terminal were not making contact.

    Plug and play distributor

Sticking with the original dist means you retain the original ign advance curve for that engine. You can either swap the pick up by drilling out a rivet or swap the whole plate. Just be careful. The p/up assy contains a magnet. Make sure no metal bits gets across the pole face, which would stop...

Tell me about your ballast resistor failure.

That is why the fully enclosed/sealed BRs are better. A good thump or bump can break the brittle former the wire is wound on. The Nichrome wire also becomes brittle over time from so many heating/cooling cycles.

    HEI conversion benefits

I disagree that there is no benefit from a high-er powered HEI module. The stock module passes 5.5 amps, regulated internally by the module. The MSD #83647 module passes 7.5 amps & also has an adj rev limiter. That is a 36% increase in power delivered to the ign coil. I have a friend who runs...

    HEI conversion benefits

70 Duster, Post #9. I hope you did NOT use dielectric grease!!!! That is an insulating grease & has poor heat transfer properties, the opposite of what is needed. You need heat transfer compound between the module & the heat sink. Another thing to be aware of: the Mopar elec dist does NOT need...

    HEI conversion benefits

Yes, ECU & bal res can be removed. The conversion to HEI is a good move, period, for a number of reasons: - if you use an E core coil, such as the MSD #8207, you can eliminate the bal res. - there are less electrical connections with HEI, so less chance of problems from loose connections...

Aftermarket ignition ...do you really need one?

MS Max. Disagree with your blowtorch analogy. And so does every car maker. Because spark energy & spark plug gap size has increased over time since the days of the Model T. When you light a blowtorch, you are lighting pure, unmixed gas. When you are igniting a mixture in a IC engine, the mix...

Aftermarket ignition ...do you really need one?

[1] Phil Jacobs, founder of Jacobs ign systems says in his book: you do not want to trade current for voltage. That is because it is the heat in the current that ignites the mixture; the voltage is merely the enabler for the current to flow. [2] CD [ capacitor discharge ] ign. The various 'box'...

    Hei conversion

It is a good idea to use a relay for HEI, which is an inductive ign system. More voltage, more spark energy with inductive igns. I would pick up the 12v from the alt stud or that bat+ terminal, whichever is more convenient. Use a 10 amp inline fuse in this line.

    Pertronix II/ MSD SS

Using a standard DVM to measure low resistance gives misleading readings. I have a special Ultra Low Ohm meter that is specifically made for sub 1 ohm readings. If MSD says the coil res is 0.355 ohms, you better believe it. Same with what Pert says. You could use the MSD coil with their CD...
