    Fan clutch?

Back in the day we set the idle with the a/c on, the car in gear, parking break engaged and another mechanic applying the brakes. This was done to ensure that the car would not stall and to keep the coolant from heating when the a/c was on at a stop light. Did you set the idle in this manner?

    Water Pump Vanes (propellers)

A few years back I had to change water pumps. The 8 vane pump was replaced with a 6 vane one. Non a/c car. I compared the two and the vanes on the 6 vane pump were larger. The 8 vanes were longer but not as thick. I never measured the vanes on both of them to compare the total vane surface area.

    1969 340 radiator

X2. The original radiator in my 340 Duster had to be recored so I had a third row added. It made a noticeable difference in the engine temperature holding steady during idle and low speed stop and go traffic. It cost about $400 to have it recored with the extra row.

Driving a long distance in hot weather without AC?!

I used to carry two beach towels and would drape one over the driver bucket seat (black vinyl). The other was a spare for exchange or a passenger. Beach towels are long enough to reach from the front of the seat behind your legs to over the back of the seat so they don't creep down your back...

Best way to clean calcium build up out of a radiator??

Well, I am a chemist. Pool acid is hydrochloric acid. It is a strong acid and reacts quickly to dissolve the calcium carbonate. It will also dissolve copper and could damage the radiator if it is left inside for too long. Disposal of hydrochloric acid is a problem. That is why I did not...

Best way to clean calcium build up out of a radiator??

X2 Since the radiator is out of the car and you can let it soak, the vinegar will do its job without harming the copper. You may have to drain and refill with vinegar once or twice depending on the amount of calcium carbonate build-up.

    White Vingar Radiator Flush

Vinegar contains about 4 - 8 % acetic acid. Acetic acid is a weak acid which is why it took two days to remove the rust from the cap. It is a mild etchant which means it acts slowly. Acetic acid rinses clean with water and using baking soda to neutralize it is not really necessary if you flush...

    water wetter

OK, when I made my final comment I was still thinking in cast iron terms. Do not use Cascade liquid in a system that includes aluminum heads, block, or aluminum components such as the timing chain cover or thermostat housing. Liquid detergent is alkaline and would corrode aluminum. Using a...

Well, you guys piqued my interest in this thread. The common ingredient used by Chrlyserfat's fabric softener, Arco440's Cascade, and the Honda coolant used in the citation provided by autoxcuda is the chemical class of compounds called "surfactants" (SURFace ACTive AgeNTs). Their purpose is to...
