    HOME MADE EXHAUST SYSTEM

I have the same mini-tubbed configuration... but have a fuel cell in the trunk, so the tailpipes were mucy easier. Off-the-shelf 3" tailpipes worked with one (I think) pie-cut on each to get them to come down behind the axle where I wanted them.

    Glass Packs

I put a pair of Summit "turbo" mufflers on my 3" x-pipe system, also a pair of 3" glasspacks in the rear. Still too loud... I must be too old

    A-Body Fenderwall Headers...what brand do I have?

I had a pair on my first big-block A-body many years ago (Hooker 5205, IIRC). As I've said, they were a big hit. They hit the small front tires. They hit the body. They hit the ground and every speed bump. Too close to the master cylinder. And, of course, big hacking holes in the inner fenders...

Header dilemmas- 67 Barracuda FB w/383

They can be found... but be sitting down when you see the price! Usually well into four figures for the pair. I have B-body headers (the set that was used for the pics on BBD) on my car and they fit very well with only a couple little dents. But as noted, manual steering only. You probably could...

How to quiet down my 3" exhaust?

Tickets aren't  (well, fix-it tickets may be). Anyway, I've gotten some actual suggestions so now I need to look under the trunk floor and see what I can fit with the least work. Unfortunately I ran the glasspacks pretty close to the springs; it's where the tailpipes came out. So a...

How to quiet down my 3" exhaust?

Cute story, until the cops pull you over again for the same issue... I'm not doing it because it's too loud for law enforcement (it's not, especially at cruise and idle), but because the noise annoys me :p

How to quiet down my 3" exhaust?

I didn't even install a stereo, because I knew I wouldn't be hearing it clearly anyway  Besides, I like the sound of the 451, just not quite so MUCH of it! Jdsduster, what exactly are you disagreeing with, and what do you propose instead?

How to quiet down my 3" exhaust?

Hmm. Perhaps I should just work on sound-insulating the (former) back seat area! :) It's really not very loud behind the car (or so I've been told). I agree, a bigger muffler is the approach I'm looking for - but as you know, the space allocated for mufflers under an A-body is rather limited...

How to quiet down my 3" exhaust?

Those don't look like they'll flow very well, with those louvers sticking into the stream? Although that's less important at the end of the exhaust system. I know some have run 3" to the mufflers and 2.5" tailpipes with little if any power loss, but significantly quieter. I don't want to redo...

How to quiet down my 3" exhaust?

Aren't those the same as the Summit turbo mufflers though? How about another pair of turbo mufflers in place of the glasspacks... any problem with putting them in series?

How to quiet down my 3" exhaust?

I definitely want to keep it free-flowing (the 451 is probably near 500 hp at the moment, and quite a bit more when I put the massaged aluminum heads on this winter that flow 293.5 cfm). There is room for almost any muffler under the trunk... Doesn't Flowmaster have a 70 series too?

How to quiet down my 3" exhaust?

I must be too old, because it's too loud. (More accurately, I prefer to speak softly and carry a big stick) :p Anyhow, my 451 Dart has quite a rumble with headers, dual 3" with X-pipe and full tailpipes, Summit "turbo" mufflers in the stock locations, and glasspacks under the trunk floor for...

    3”.

My 3" with x-pipe and full tailpipes is still too loud inside the car and it's definitely rumbly outside too... can't imagine dumping them underneath (illegal in MO anyway). But that transparent driveshaft is a pretty neat piece :poke:

    not too noisy

From Summit's website: Case Exterior Length (in.):13.000 in. Thickness (in):4.750 in. Width (in):10.000 in. They're not huge but they fit nicely under an A-body. Like I said, there is room under the trunk floor for considerably longer mufflers so that's where I would want to put them. Ideas?

    not too noisy

Out at the tail, I wouldn't think as much packing/quieting would be required? Here's a pic of the inside of the Summit turbo.

    not too noisy

Any thoughts on quieting my setup? (Dual 3" with x-pipe). Summit turbo mufflers in front of the rear axle, then glasspacks under the trunk floor. STILL too loud for me. Since there is no fuel tank in the way (cell in trunk), there is plenty of room. Could I put another pair of turbo mufflers...

    Fenderwell headers.....again

I had a pair of Hooker fenderwells (I think #5205, it's been a long time) in a '70 A-body. They were a big hit - they hit the small tires, they hit the body, they hit the ground, they hit speed bumps... not to mention the impressive heat where your feet go. And that was with the low-deck...

Exhaust turn downs at rear bumper

3" and X-pipe, all the way back. "Turbo" mufflers in the usual place, and glasspacks under the trunk floor. The turndowns exit the glasspacks immediately.

    Muffler selection

I have a 3" X-pipe system behind my 451 with Summit turbo mufflers, AND glasspacks, with tailpipes all the way to the rear bumper. Still think it's kind of loud. Maybe I'm too old ;)

    before the axle turn downs

It must vary with state law. In MO the pipes have to exit from under the car. Mine go out the back and it's still pretty loud inside.

Headers for 73 Duster with 451

From post #39: They fit in my '72 Dart with a 451 low-deck nicely. :poke: So: B engine, stock exhaust port heads, manual steering, column jacket shortened, mini-starter. Any other combo is unknown but less likely to fit without a lot of reworking tubes... :)

Headers for 73 Duster with 451

Headers for 73 Duster with 451

They fit in my '72 Dart with a 451 low-deck nicely. Hardly any dings at all. But I really don't see how they'd clear with a 440 which is taller and wider. Maybe if you got creative with the engine position?

    Header fitment rant, Doug's

I just read this entire thread... wonder how the OP (MOA) is making out. It's been nearly a month since his last post. It surprises me that anyone has this much trouble fitting A-body headers on a small-block. I didn't even have to ding my Hedman B-body headers nearly that bad to fit my 451 in...
