One thing to check is the rubber brake line from the chassis to the differential. Make sure it is not close to the tailpipe especially if you have a single pot master cylinder. Melt that hose and you have no brakes.

I"m old school myself. When I was a kid my neighbor drag raced a mopar. I spent as much time as I could at his garage, and as a teen helped him construct and crew on this car before joining the Navy. Lee Smith was super fast on the tree, and almost never lost a round.
