    Vavle lash

I agree with MRL, that's what I do but in addition I also use the Mopar lash decal. With the balancer marked carefully and setting on the marks each time you can keep accurate records and notice any trends in wear. Either too much or too little. This can help spot valvetrain problems before they...

cast crank 440, how much can it take????

I've heard they are more than reliable at the 600 HP level. I had one made about 550 lasted me for 10 years, sold the engine and it's still going some 25 years later. In fact my friend just freshened it two years ago.

    Pretty much yes it is.

    Big Block/A-518

You have it right. The trans will shift automatically you just need a toggle or rocker switch for the O/D and L/U.

    Big Block/A-518

Honestly I don't know if the converter is up to the task or not. Look at the plug that faces up on your trannys, if there is 2 prongs in it, it is a non lockup. If it has 3 it's a lockup. The center prong is 12 volts hot with ignition on, the outer two are for lock up and overdrive. All you...

    Big Block/A-518

First off, here is a link to the price sheet from JW. The TF 727 to Mopar BB is # 42457 and it's price is $356.25. http://www.racewithjw.com/JANUARY-Product2011.php Now the diesel trans has a totally different converter from the gas motor ones. The early 518s did not have lock up so it is...

    Big Block/A-518

Yes you cut off the stock bell housing. It can be done with a cut off wheel and I've even seen it done with a drill (what a hack job though) but having a machine shop do it with an end mill or something is a lot neater. Check page 3 http://racewithjw.com/JW-08-Catalog.pdf Not everything...

    Big Block/A-518

Yep, JW Ultra Bell for a BB and a 727 will fit your needs perfectly. No welding needed they bolt to the front pump plus it doubles as an SFI flex plate shield.

mech Roller vs Mech flat tappet cam Q

I recall something about bushing the first two lifter bores on the right bank when using a roller but I can't for the life of me remember why. I haven't touched a BB in decades. There are now pressurized pin oiled roller lifters on the market so using them in a street car isn't that much of...

    Driveline vibration!!! I need help!

Many driveshaft shops are notoriously sloppy when it comes to welding the yokes on the tube, that's why they have to balance them. I make my own shafts in a lathe and install the yoke so there is no runout at four points perpendicular and horizontal to the u joint cross. I've never had to have a...

    383 B vs 383 RB???

The old RB 383 was a small bore engine, not worth screwing with, in fact MaMopar didn't think much of it because they only made them two years.

    Cam Degreeing-mystery?

Cam timing basically only affects where the power band is and when an engine makes its peak power. If the car is heavy and the converter isn't loose enough then advancing the cam can bring the power on sooner, or if it's got too loose of a converter or a too steep rear gear then you can retard...

Anyone tried the VFN fiberglass for an A-body???

I have bought a complete Daytona body from them, and a hood and bumpers for my Duster from them as well. I had no issues with anything I've purchased from them but it's been more than 15 years since I've bought from them.

power valve makes my 440 ping??

I have to disagree with Moper on this one. I've had better luck and better driveability in radical cammed engines without the power valve, you just need to jet up for not having it 8-10 jet sizes.

power valve makes my 440 ping??

Holley carbs are notorious for not having flat sealing surfaces, I would take the carb off, disassemble it and file the main body flat where the metering blocks and base plate bolt on. Put it back together with some good gaskets, I like the Demon gaskets personally. Oh and don't forget to...

power valve makes my 440 ping??

Yeah, take the power valve back out and put the plug back in.

Sorry about your friend but that's a very cool thing for you to do. You're a real friend. The car is very cool too. I wish you luck.

    big block vs. smal block

If you are starting from scratch a big block would be better although you could run 12's with either a big or small block fairly easily. The BB advantage comes later down the road with increased power potential later. It will cost nearly the same to stroke a big block with alumunim heads as...

    400 stroker

Low deck stroker with aluminum heads would be nearly equal the weight of an iron headed small block. I was seriously considering building that for my Duster when someone told me I couldn't run 10's with a 340. Mind you this was 17 years ago when there wasn't a lot of good stuff available, so I...
