How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

Update. Thanks to all for your advice. I ended up replacing the right rear bearing and cleaning the left rear bearing. All seals were replaced that I could replace. It’s back together and feels/sounds good. I replaced brakes and brake cylinders while I was in there. Next step is under the...

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

Thanks. Your info above combined with another re-read of the manual and a re-read of all comments above have given me a picture that I understand.

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

I’ve never done this before and I’m still trying to get my head around the fact that the bearing cup is floating on the axle instead of being attached to the rest of the bearing. That said...I think I understand how the adjuster can be used to reduce the gap beside the cup. I’ll need to go...

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

Thanks. I’ll reassemble the back right axle and brakes and move over to the left side

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

I did replace inner and outer seal. I’m not clear with your terms “button in the 3rd member”. Is this something in the differential? If I lift up on the retainer with the axle as shown in the picture - the race will press against the inner race/bearing assembly. I can turn the the adjuster a...

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

I pressed on a new bearing this week using a 55 Ton press. I expected the inner race to go further inside the outer rack. When I pulled the axle, the threaded adjuster was screwed in to the point that there was little or no thread showing. It takes almost all of the available threads on the...

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

Yes, press bearing on first...to the shoulder...then the collar. Make sure outer retainers are in correct orientation before pressing everything in place. I believe I used a small iron pipe stub over the axle to press against the inner race. Thanks1

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

I’m still learning how to use this site. I didn’t intend to include the picture of a busted bearing with my last comment but I don’t see a way to delete it. The picture I was referring to was in post #10.

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

Set it up like this in your press. In the picture posted earlier by three wood the bearing has been pressed on first and it appears that the retainer is about to be pressed on. I was wondering if the bearing and retainer should be pressed on separately. If the bearing goes on first...it seems...

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

I did replace the outer grease seal. I also downloaded the factory manual and it was very helpful. However, the manual was not dumbed down enough for me to know that I could press the bearing down ‘till it stopped. I attempted to press the bearing on yesterday without using the proper collar...

How to press on right rear axle bearing w Hydraulic press

Ready to press this on with hydraulic press. It appears that I should press the bearing and bearing retainer until bearing bottoms out agains the step/shoulder in the axle. I’m assuming that the retainer flange with adjuster will still be loose and can later be adjusted to eliminate most of the...

Advice needed vs 71 Duster rear wheel bearing replacement

I just gave the axle a closer look and now realize that the axle diameter steps down very slightly at the line pointed out in the photo above. Using my mic - I determined that the diameter is constant on either side of the line. Does this sound like wear or perhaps the way the axle was machined...

Advice needed vs 71 Duster rear wheel bearing replacement

OK... I’ll start by admitting that I attempted this bearing installation today with some unanswered questions and no prior experience with pressing a bearing on with a hydraulic press. I messed up my new bearing because I didn’t use the spacer (shown below the bearing in the above photo). I’ve...

Advice needed vs 71 Duster rear wheel bearing replacement

I just checked and the only groove is a clean line at the tip of the screwdriver. The rest of the stuff you can’t feel.

Advice needed vs 71 Duster rear wheel bearing replacement

Bearings are off and axle looks ok to me. What did you see to indicate a problem with the axle? I was surprised to see that the bearing (Inner and outer race) didn’t have much or any visible damage. I’m sure I could hear some noise coming from the right rear wheel when running it on jack...

Advice needed vs 71 Duster rear wheel bearing replacement

Success! I gave the axle hub a few licks on the opposite side and saw some movement at the gasket and then used the brake drum to pull it out. Worked great. I have access to a Auto Hobby Shop on the Air Force Base that I live next to... so I’ll take this stuff over there after parts are...

Advice needed vs 71 Duster rear wheel bearing replacement

I have taken the right rear wheel down to this point and its not clear how to pull the bearings out. I’ve looked at the manual and didn’t see instructions on this step. A local auto shop guy said I could install an old rim and hammer the rim ‘till the bearings pulled out. Seems brutal. Can...

Advice needed vs 71 Duster rear wheel bearing replacement

Still hanging on to my Duster (purchased in ‘71) but not driving a lot. Took it out recently and discovered that my right rear wheel bearing is noisy. I don’t recall ever servicing the differential or rear bearings. I’m assuming that I need to replace fluid and rear bearings. I’ve looked for...

Any way to change 3.91 rear-end to ???

My 71 Duster w 318 3 speed manual came w a 3.91 rear end. It is really running at a high RPM on the interstate. Is there a good way to change out a part in the differential that would reduce this to a 3.50 or less?
