    RF brake locked up. Why?

It appears that the two top springs are identical. Is that normal for your car? My Duster’s primary shoes (and pictures I’ve seen in repair manuals) have a spring that is shorter and larger in diameter than the spring on the secondary shoe.

    RF brake locked up. Why?

Since I just went thru this...I’ll chime in again. I bled my brakes before discovering that I had a collapsed brake line. The brake system has sufficient pressure to force liquid thru the blocked line but very little pressure to allow the brake cylinders to “relax”. Given plenty of time... the...

    RF brake locked up. Why?

I just dealt with this very problem yesterday. I’ll post pictures showing internal collapse of the hydraulic hose.

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

I broke off the separated liner on the bottom left shoe and will replace with new shoes if they work well after a couple of test drives.

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

I took the left right brake apart and reassembled with more attention to the minor details....I read and re-read manuals and have better results so far. The E-brake works much better now too. If the rear brakes survive some test drives... I will replace the damaged rear brake shoes and...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

Congrats rustycow.... I think you hit the nail on the head. I replaced the rear hose this evening and cut the old hose apart. The old hose that I said “looks healthy” had a blockage. I couldn’t blow air thru the hose. I’ll add a photo showing the blocked section of hose. I’m guessing there...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

Yes - that makes sense. I’m sitting here looking at three different references...the primary shoe spring goes on first. Also read that the crimp on the adjuster cable needs to face the back (I noticed mine facing out).

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

Brakes were tight about 3 days ago after I let the self adjusters do their thing. I just pulled car into garage and let it sit ‘till yesterday. I jacked it up yesterday and both wheels turned nicely - felt perfect. Very light drag...stopped turning after about one revolution when I spun them...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

Pulled springs off yesterday and they won’t work when turned over. Need to figure out why things are not fitting together better.

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

Sorry to hear that the brake bleeder was probably a bad investment. My wife has plenty of experience with the pump and hold routine during brake bleeding. Thanks for the info.

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

Thanks for all your inputs. Much to consider. I’ll update later this week as I plow thru this project and will follow suggestion to not do everything at once. I’m interested to jack the car up tomorrow to see if the rear brakes are still tight. Should tell me something if they are not...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

I’ve ordered brake shoes, flexible rear brake line, and new spring & hardware kit for rear brakes. Also ordered a vacuum kit to assist brake bleeding. Already have new master brake cylinder, front brake shoes and new wheel cylinders for front brakes. Rear brake cylinders were just replaced...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

I ordered new shoes this evening before I saw your recommendation - I didn’t request rivited shoes. I’m curious... how do you describe a properly adjusted brake? My Dad taught me over 50 years ago (on his ‘55 Chevy) to adjust ‘till I could barely feel the brake starting to drag. Not sure if...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

I’m going to remove and re-install the brake springs. I’m reluctant to replace the brake shoes before I have reason to think brakes are working okay..... I’d hate to smoke another set of new brake shoes. I’m thinking that the separated piece of liner might drag the drums. Would it be nuts to...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

I dug thru records (actually receipts) this AM and found where the rear hose was replaced in 2007 as part of a brake job. As you can see in the photo - the rubber hose looks pretty healthy.

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

Interesting.... looks like both springs on the left are upside down vs the way they are installed on the right side. ....I’ll fix that but not optimistic that the total fix will be that easy since both sides are getting too tight. The previous posts give me a lot to look at. I also have a new...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

As I look again at the left rear wheel - it appears that the bottom edge of the front shoe is separating from the lining. Perhaps no surprise since that wheel was smoking hot yesterday. Unfortunate since its was installed about a 100 miles ago.

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

I can’t guarantee .... but I can’t imagine why I’d have the E-brake on since that would have made it very difficult to pull off the drums.

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

Update... With adjusters backed off and self-adjusters still intact.. I went out and went thru the ritual of backing up and applying brakes ...over 50 cycles. This started with a very spongy brake pedal and ended with a nice solid brake pedal. I then jacked the car - one side at a time - and...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

Interesting but makes sense the the e-brake could mess up automatic adjustment. Hmmm. I do sometimes back up before I notice that the E-brake is still engaged. I wonder....

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

First photo is left rear and second photo is the right rear. I’m going to back off the adjustment on both sides and let the self adjusters do their thing and see if I have a repeat of the issue. I’ll also check the E-cable vs release a couple of times before I button things up. I’m still left...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

For the record - I posted my question in #7 before the #5 post appeared - which answered my question about which shoe faced forward. I just pulled the left and right wheels off and the shoes are in the proper location. I also checked the adjusters by pulling the adjusting cable and the...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

I'm headed out to pull wheels and check. Based on info I've just looked up - the leading/primary shoe should be the shorter shoe. Agree?

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

The brakes were replaced one side at a time - so the adjusters were not swapped. As for secondary shoe on primary side....please educate me on which is primary and which is secondary. I called myself putting new shoes on the same way the old shoes were setup. I'll need to pull the wheel and...

Ever had self adjusting brakes overtighten?

I recently replaced rear brake pads and brake cylinders. I have 10 inch drum brakes on a '71 Duster. I called myself adjusting the brakes to where I could barely detect a drag during wheel rotation. Yesterday- I took the car out and, after a 15 mile highway drive, I detected the smell of hot...
