how to quiet down 3 inch exhaust

I have a full 3" system on my Barracuda. It was quite loud with turbo mufflers so I added two glasspacks right behind the crossover pipe. What an improvement!

    Big block stroker exhaust question

Second that, I bought one there too. It`s a heavy duty piece, had great fit with stock stuff but it wouldn`t work with my replacement trans so I sold it to a member here. There`s a copy made of aluminum that weighs a fraction of the weight of this one. Weight also becomes an issue when you go to...

    Big Block Exhaust Manifolds

How about some Schumacher Tri-Y`s. Not too expensive for a header and certainly as good as any stock exhaust manifold.

Bought the 3" Summit exhaust system

I don`t know how I missed your first post on this subject but I`m sorry I did. I`m glad to hear you`ve got the system installed and it`s singing out loud now. It did take a lot of cutting of the tailpipes to get them to transition nicely from the muffler over the axle. I also installed stock...

    TTI X-Pipe Exhaust Install

Great pictures and I am totally jealous of your garage floor. :D

    exhaust drone/harmonic resonance

I don`t remember what Walker muffler it was that went on my Dart because I had my muffler shop do the install. If I remember correctly though the outlet is a fraction smaller than the inlet if you use the factory size tailpipes. I did have an H-pipe installed which may have helped with resonance...

    exhaust drone/harmonic resonance

A good three pass muffler like Walker makes should quiet your car nicely. I have a set on my 68 GTS. Sounds great.

    '67 GTS w/exhaust tips???

Didn`t the 67, 273 come with single exhaust?

    '67 GTS w/exhaust tips???

I didn`t think the chrome tips showed up until `68 but anything`s possible. Perhaps some of the late 67 big block cars had them. ???

    I'm thinking A Body with a 440?

As far as chassis headers, if you`re just going with a mild 440 I`d suggest the Schumacher header. Good bang for the buck. They do have their limitations though and if you`re building some horsepower then I`d recommend the TTI`s. They`re expensive but built extremely well and are available in 2"...

    TTI exhaust too loud

I didn`t realize you had cutouts on your system. It sounds like you`ve got a lot invested in it already but if you have cut outs then a 3 pass muffler would be a great way to go.

    TTI exhaust too loud

You may have to make "some adjustments" to your H-pipe to make it work but it makes a lot of difference in the sound. I`ve got the glass-pack / mufflers on my Barracuda. I`ll try to get a couple pictures for you.

    TTI exhaust too loud

I`m not one who likes a real loud car either. If you put a good 3-pass muffler on it you should be good to go. Another way to quiet it down would be to add a crossover pipe and a couple glasspacks just behind the headers.

    X-Pipe, H-Pipe, or No-Pipe?

A good crossover pipe can help scavenge exhaust and reduce resonance. An H pipe may not be as efficient as an X pipe but would be better than no pipe.

    Quick header question

I`ve heard good things about Dougs headers, but they still may be out of your price range.

    Just bought TTI Headers

I bought mine from Mazzolini, they were the best deal all inclusive. Big and/or heavy stuff is expensive shipping. I sent two brake hub/rotor assemblies from Va. to Wa. and it was over $50.00.

    Header choice?

Even if the TTI`s are more expensive I believe they`re worth it. Mine fit beautifully and the connecting surfaces are done very well. Never had a leak and the collectors fit so good they don`t even require a gasket. TTI`s are good quality stuff.

Bought the 3" Summit exhaust system

I have their 3" system on my Barracuda with TTI headers. It had to have a lot of tweaking to get it to fit correctly. The mufflers are 2 pass turbo mufflers and they are loud. I bought a set of resonators to help quiet them down. I`ve read that even people who have Hooker headers have quite a...

    dual exhaust hanger location?

Yup, like the guys said, remove the back seat and you`ll see the dimples in the floor for the hanger. The 2nd gen. Darts and Cudas had 3 holes. Year One used to sell the hanger, I`m not sure if they still do. You should be able to find one though with a search of the web.

    muffler weep hole

A friend of mine works about a mile from his home and goes through mufflers about every two years. He never gets a chance to dry out the exhaust. The weep holes are a very good idea coupled with driving the car far enough to thoroughly dry out the system.

    what do you guys think

You might have to double up on gaskets if the two mating flanges are not real straight. I have seen some people weld a small brace from the collector to the block to cut down on the stress at the head flange, but in your case it may take some stress off those collector joints.

Power loss. 318 Vs 340 manifolds

Go with a cheap set of headers Adam. You can get a set from Summit for about 150 bucks. Meanwhile keep looking for a fair price on a set of manifolds.

Hey Pat, how`s that Dart coming along?

Summit exhaust systems, are they decent?

I used their 3" kit on my Barracuda but my exhaust guy said he still had to do a lot of tweaking to get it to fit well. I have TTI headers too, not Hooker so I`m sure that played a part. The mufflers (if they can be referred to as such) are LOUD. I ended up using resonators in combination with...

    Muffler recommendations

I had the Flowmaster 50 series mufflers on a big block car with 2.5" tubing all the way out the back and I still thought they were too loud. If you like it loud then the 50`s might be a good choice for you but then again it shouldn`t be too hard to find a loud muffler. :burnout:

    Exhaust hangers 72 Demon

You can buy the hangers that secure the exhaust tips to the frame rails from www.pgclassic.com/ or www.jacksautoparts.com Year One used to carry the left side hanger that supported the rear of the muffler/front of tailpipe to the floor just behind the rear seat. I don`t know if they still sell...

    Exhaust pipe repair ?

On my Barracuda I have flanges installed at the bend behind each muffler that travels up and over the axle so I can remove the pipes without having to cut up anything. I`ll post a picture if I can find one.

    Exhaust pipe repair ?

Muffler tape is a very temporary fix. There are couplers made of woven steel but they`re expensive. Probably your best bet would be to tack weld it in place and then run it up to your local muffler guy and let him finish it.

Is 3" exhaust to much for a 318??

The previous owner must have had big plans for your car to put such a large diameter exhaust system on it. Stock 318`s probably have a 1 and 7/8" tubing ( no larger than 2" ) and many reduce the size after the muffler in order to keep temperatures high and exhaust gases moving. Like most...
