I thought the same thing. The conventional carburetor wisdom seems to err on the side of under rather than over-carbing. I don't know enough to recommend one way or another but if you don't plan on ever moving any more air with this motor I would be surprised if a ~500cfm carb wouldn't be...

Is there something inherently wrong with the 273 manifolds? From everything that I read, the stock small block manifolds flow nearly as well as headers...or near enough to not justify the $500+ cash layout on a mild engine like the subject of this thread.

Agreed. The negatives to a downstairs garage are many and significant. fact that it's heated and convenient is an absolutely joy. I'm a pretty slow/mistake-prone mechanic and if I didn't have the luxury of winter months to fart around and take my time, my car would never be on the road! :D...

I assume that you'd want as little fuel in the tank as possible before replacing the sending unit...but I'm in the middle of swapping out my end and right now I have totally unrestricted access to the sending unit. Yep. A very good call. I have an electric heater which makes me feel only a little better. You're completely right about that...it sure seems like a terrible idea but somehow, it seems to have worked out. People also used to breathe in leaded exhaust fumes all day long too. :D

Good question, good info. It sounds like the consensus is 3/8" if you're replacing... Where will you see the limits of the stock 5/16" lines though? Mine seem to be fine shape but they'll be feeding a bigger motor now. Until this thread, I had assumed they would be adequate.
