    Dyno testing a stock(?) 1972 440

Sorry I don't remember off the top of my head I'll have to go back and watch that episode again. Regarding high compression being more expensive... I'd argue it is because if I had wanted more than 9:1 in my current 5.9L Magnum with open-chamber Edelbrocks (long story) I would have had to swap...

    Dyno testing a stock(?) 1972 440

On the Engine Masters show on Motor Trend they did a dyno test of a motorhome 440, IIRC Steve Dulcich chose one of the Whiplash/Thumpr-type cams because the specs worked out for a super-low-compression engine with stock heads. Seems like he was right that thing put out some serious power with...

    I CAN’T DRIVE 145mph

Definitely getting one of those for my car, that is indeed awesome thanks!

    I CAN’T DRIVE 145mph

I was gonna say, how does the computer know what type of tires are on the car when you change them? Lol

    I CAN’T DRIVE 145mph

That sounds a lot like a speed-limiter issue in the engine computer, even with a stock 5.7 Hemi the car would literally start to fly before you'd be overcome by drag. I've had my Duster up to 110 a couple times and there was still plenty left with 2.94 gears in the back, I was barely getting...

471 Big Block high rpm problems

If that's the case it's probably close to ideal then, advance curve should be OK too. Has your idle vacuum increased since you fixed up the carb?

471 Big Block high rpm problems

I wouldn't go higher on the total but you can test what happens if you crank more advance in at idle; if the vacuum increases keep going until the engine kicks back against the starter when you crank it warmed up. Then when you find a good number go in and limit the mechanical/total timing in...

471 Big Block high rpm problems

That's great to hear! I would add that your idle vacuum could probably be higher, now that the carb is in good shape I would try adding more initial timing (but watch the total timing so it doesn't go too high of course).

Nice glad to hear i was over thinking it :)

    Drag strip launch problem

Rumblefish that's basically what i meant by mods with your reference of the primaries being uncovered at high g's... since the bowls are oriented front-to-back the fuel is probably sloshing to the back and screwing up fuel delivery to the primary boosters. Carters have very shallow angles that...

    Drag strip launch problem

I would also try the Demon first, your combo seems pretty stout and I wouldn't be surprised if your Edelbrock and/or Thermoquad need some mods to work. Usually fuel delivery problems show up at the big end, there should be enough reserve fuel in the bowls to handle the launch. But yes your...

    Strip to Street Help Needed

 good to hear, how do you like that distributor? I've wanted to upgrade my factory electronic dizzy for a while i never liked the 'trial and error' method for tuning the advance curve with those slots on the advance plate.

    Strip to Street Help Needed

Hopefully that didn't go on for too long I'm sure the oil was in terrible shape, great way to kill rings too... If you haven't already done so change the oil, if you did it a while ago check it now and see if it smells like gas. Also put in a 180* T-stat, get it up to proper temp and have...

    360 or 383?

Nobody mentioned a stroker kit for the 383. 440source has a ~430-cube kit i like. Very similar to a 451 low-deck motor just with a 383 block instead. Not too much longer stroke either and with a super light rotating assembly compared to stock. Just a thought lol

    Purple Vs Lunati Voodoo

Funny to see this brought back I'm still running that same '60401' voodoo cam now in my 10.5:1 360 five years later. Behaves very differently with the big jump in cubes and compression from the tired 318, massive torque 1800-5000ish RPM then I can feel it start to nose over a tad. No wear...

Ah screw it he should use an LS so he can fit in and be just like the thousands of other chebby guys with no creativity or fab skills who have done the exact same thing

    quench vs no quench?

Another benefit of quench is requiring a slightly leaner mixture for max power (more efficient) and being able to run at light loads on much leaner (16:1 plus) mixtures. The fast burn reduces variations in combustion between each cylinder making it not have that "lean surge" and hesitation i'm...

Cheap alternative to pricey flat tappet oil in street cars...

Hey Dave just now found this thread. I also was somewhat worried about this when I realized my Jeep 4.0L had a flat-tappet cam but if you look at the stock cam and valvespring specs for those years ('91-96) they are SUPER lazy, as in very slow ramps and soft springs. My 4.0 recently started...

    Dyno testing a stock(?) 1972 440

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but this one has a lot of interesting info, any updates on the build IQ52?? My cousin has a '72 440 out of a Polara with only 45,000 miles on it and we will probably be taking a similar route "heating it up" a bit before we drop it in his '71 Satellite.

    Dyno testing a stock(?) 1972 440

I know, it regulates what temperature your engine does run at, and when you have high compression you need your engine to run cooler to reduce detonation and make more power... A '69 Polara with a factory-original 10:1 383 4-bbl I worked on last summer had an old sticker on the radiator support...

    Dyno testing a stock(?) 1972 440

Higher compression always increases vacuum and smooths the idle with a bigger cam. It also increases your gas mileage at the same time as power (it is mathematically related to the "fuel conversion efficiency" of the engine). Heat from combustion also is higher meaning you have to beef up the...

    Knocking and Clicking noises questions.

If it does it again take off a valve cover and find which lifter isn't pumping up. Take that lifter out and take it apart and clean out, sometimes they get junk in them which blocks the oil feed holes.

    Bad pinging issue?

Check cranking compression that will tell you for sure...

Pinging just off idle when taking off

Get your timing set before you go using race gas, your engine should run fine on 91 pump premium with that cam, compression, and aluminum heads

    4.0L HO Jeep Engine Build

So ramcharger is all you did to increase fuel flow the bigger Mustang injectors? I just upgraded to the APN header, later intake manifold, and bigger head pipe (I made a thread about it over at 'FJO') and it didn't pick up as much power as I expected... I think it's because I still have the...

    low compression

something about low compression... you get a slower burn which results in slower movement of the gases in and out of the chambers. Having bigger intake valves will give less power in the lower rev ranges with low compression because the outgoing charge can't scavenge as well. The trick is to...

    beefing up my 318???

By the looks of it you don't need any more upgrade parts to make it faster, I think with a tune-up it will have more than enough power. Adjusting the initial timing takes about 10 minutes, should be around 10-12* BTDC on your engine. If you take off the air cleaner, does the carburetor look...

    beefing up my 318???

Try posting a pic of the engine/car if you don't know the details and we might be able to give you more info about what the engine has, at least on the outside. If it was rebuilt with a bigger cam it most likely already has a 4-bbl. intake. If you look under the car does it have dual exhaust...
