    340 dual point??

Not sure of the value by todays standards, but in the 70's they were bad ***. My buds cammed 70' 340 was breaking up in the mid 5k range with his newly purchased DC electronic setup, so i took it to a friend that was a PS racer at the time...Malcolm Durham...and he yanked the electronic out and...

    crank no start

Sometimes a spark check will look positive, but the juice is weak enough that fuel and compression will drowned it out. If your dizzy uses a box, make sure it has a good/clean ground.

    Another 318 set up

Back to post 1... Yes Dan, your thoughts would make a fine daily driver that has plenty of ''pep'' to around 5200ish rpm's even with the 500 carb. Not sure what you'll eventually do or want when you get your car, but not everyone needs a street ''hot rod'' as a lot here may think.

Crossover Tube and Valve Spring Pressure Questions

This. You have plenty of spring imo. My buds 340 crossed the finish line a hair over 7k with a similar setup. 273 rockers and ran a Torker to boot. :) As far as the oil mods, as long as have 6qt+ oil capacity, i don't think it's needed.

Loud pop and sputter on WOT? 68 318 Barracuda

SMH......No one has asked how stock or old the short block is. Can you say timing chain?

Low speed torque and driveability ?

Aren't all these posted torque charts run at WOT? To me, drivability means nice/smooth bottom end acceleration with the least amount of throttle opening. I'm still sticking with my ''big inch/long arm theory.....:)

Low speed torque and driveability ?

Imo, big cube long stroke engines with mild cams deliver the best compromise. Anyone that's driven the older stock GM 455's knows what i'm talking about. Since we're talkin A bodies, i'd build a 9 to 1 low deck BB with a 4'' plus crank, iron heads, 220ish cam and the regulation bolt ons with a...

    64 barracuda 273

If the 67's are 920 castings, they have equivalent chambers to your stock heads. No perf benefit, but allows the use of any small port late intake.

    Low peak oil pressure

I'd look at the remote filter. Years ago a bud with a 428 Fairlane lost around 30lbs after installing one.

    very mild 360 build.

I was leaning towards the Oregon, but just remembered you're using the low gear set so i would go with the MP myself as i believe it would give a little more mid range torque. Just throwing out another opinion.:)

    920 heads - What Cam?

Can't believe no one asked about a carb/intake or exhaust upgrades...:) I was gonna suggest a Hughes Whiplash....https://www.hughesengines.com/Index/products.php?partid=30170

    Pop pop on exhaust side

I'll throw one out there.....Too much preload on the valves?

Engine Quest Dodge Magnum Heads New Zealand castings.

To give you a little bump..... I'm no expert with Magnums, but i believe the NZ castings were superior before they moved to China. That said, if i recall, the intake ports were in the 170ish range. Not sure what your goals are, but 400hp with a 360 is easily available. Now 500 would take some...

    Maybe I've learned a good lesson . . .

I think you could teach some a lesson. :) Your original build is about spot on imo. First off, that car with a small block is not near as heavy as it looks and makes a good handling ''road'' car. One of my early encounters with Mopars was with a college student neighbors 69' 318 Charger in the...

Poll for Minimum Torque for a performance street Machine?

About 15% over the cubic inches for the engine you use. Your choice of car weight is optional. :)

    SB Stroker Intake Choices

My .02 cents......Converter will probably flash in the 4's now so gearing won't make a ton of difference. That said, the X-cel is a doorstop for your combo imo and the RPM's mid range won't be needed, so of the other two, i really like the TF Track heat as it's a short enough to not worry about...

    3.910 + a few lines

I agree, that combo just wasn't meant to be. We could have some fun talking the old school stuff, but i don't want to step on Rani's thread. Maybe another time.

    3.910 + a few lines

Yikes. Glad you were there for that one. They were great engines. My bud with a Duster bought a 65' 327 Vette with 4.11's and bought a full crate LT1 and that car went 12.40's at 110 with nothing more then side pipe headers and slicks.

    3.910 + a few lines

About 45yrs ago i managed a A/C Delco warehouse in Maryland and got great prices on Target engines. I installed a few for people over a couple years without issue, but one 350 was for a show car Monte Carlo that had to be chromed out so before i installed the new oil pan i checked the rod bolts...

    3.910 + a few lines

Mainly not knowing how well the factory bore was done and if there was any taper, and because it's a 318 remaining stock, i'd personally rather do a full cleanup and get 70/100k out of it knowing that's the last rebuild i would do on that engine.

    3.910 + a few lines

Many moons ago i had one very similar to that and talked myself into a cheap cleanup with a larger then normal hone job, ring spacers on the wore out cast slugs with cut down oversized rings. That along with knurled valve guides and a cam upgrade gave me a pretty hot running engine........for...

    3.910 + a few lines

One spot won't be enough, but if the cylinders are consistent up and down the bores then a .030 cleanup should suffice. And i would feel more comfortable with a rebuild.

How tight to set solid lifters

I watched a guy try it in the early 70's on his hyd cammed/273 rocker 340 12sec race car and he snapped one of the adjuster nuts clean off, lol.

    Exhaust Manifolds

One of my buds in the 70's bought a 70' Duster 318, bone stock internals w/3spd and 3.23's. With a LD4b, 600 Holley, regulation headers and 2.5 exhaust installed went 15.00 at 91mph on multiple occasions. That's about 200 net hp. I doubt a 72/74, non hp, 340/360 style manifold would have slowed...

    273 dilemma

Hard to believe a stock 273 could ''balloon'' a converter. Is it possible at some point the wrong vert was installed and that put all that pressure on the crank? If so, i'd be checking the trans out also. Just a thought?

    BBD 2bbl turns interesting

You say it's a ''stocker'' so i'm guessing a 360 with a lot of duration, converter and gear. I'm not disparaging it at all, just wonder what it's like racing in that configuration. Shifting at 45/5000g a riding the converter most of the way. :)

    Edelbrock 2177 Cams???

    Edelbrock Performer-Plus camshaft for Small-Block Chrysler 318-340-360 V-8

    Edelbrock 2177 Cams???

I assume this is going in a low compression teen and that's a great choice, especially with stock gears. As far as sound, you may get a hint with headers and the timing retarded some, but with a good tune i doubt you'll notice it.

Engine health checking help for a sunday purchase

My only advise is, don't pay too much for whatever the total of the parts available is. Not sure what brand the TR is, but i'd treat the engine/trans as cores until you can really break it down to see what you have. Good luck with it.
