I've never had a 318 on a dyno. I have built a few. 318s have low output because of the 3 C's Compression Camshaft Carburetion #1 being Compression....all 318s were 9:1 or less. Custom 318 pistons are pricey. Someone really should dyno a 10-11:1 318 combo, but not many people buy custom...

I've ran a Edelbrock Performer with a thermoquad, a RPM Air Gap with a Edelbrock 1406, and a Weiand 7515 x-celerator single plane, with a Holley Double Pumper. I swear I felt a 50hp seat of the pants difference with the Weiand and Holley.

Previous owner built the 318 engine that Slinger came out of said the engine and trans were FRESH....with less than 5000 miles on them...I bought it and it didnt last 2 weeks till it started knocked the chain on the timing case..... sorry, no I can not. Shortly after that pic was taken in 2011...

302' heads come from the factory with 1.78/1.50" valves.....and 318 spec light duty (wimpy) springs. If guides are standard height..(not machined)...then Valve retainer to Valve seal clearance is still the same...around .490-.500 But you mention slightly stiffer springs.... I personally...

I had a Crosswinds 318-340-360 AirGap intake I got off Ebay.....was drilled for either LA or Magnum heads.....used for it for close to a year...with a Edelbrock 1406. Fit good, looked good, ran good.....but.. I have had many different intakes on SBM's over the years.... 73' 340...

I would put EFI and OD on the 440 setup.....:burnout: No way I would consider a Magnum swap down from a BB-Abody.... my honest opinion....

I was thinking the ring gap was a little excessive too...if starting out fresh. Most stock compression, OE setups run .016" top ring..... .019-.20" second. Even if Forced Induction were an option on the table.....I think I would have ended up more around .020" top ring.....022" second...

timing chains are known to slap the timing case as well...... I thought I had a KNocker one time I tore the engine down to find the OIL SLINGER installed backwards....less than 5,000 miles on a "Fresh" engine.

Your question, illustrates that you dont really know much about 318's, or cylinder heads in general. You want to increase the power of your existing 318... You want some lope, and some more mid range, and a little more top end power. You didnt state any specifics about the EXACT 318 you...

77 is a bad year core. Find a 1973, 1974.....or skip the crap and go to 87,88,89,90,91. The crap being....high mileage, smogged down, never tuned up RV/Truck engines. Find a wrecked Ramcharger 4x4. Find a Wrecked D250. Find a Low Mileage 73/74/75 Rv. Whatever you do....dont spend more than...

Thanks...I try to post relevant info....and I HAVE browsed thousands of threads, and been messing with Mopars for the last 20 years. IMHO....if you wanted to stay with Cast Iron heads and make everyday NA 500hp.....I think it would be Hard to beat a set of INDY LA-X heads....for $1050.00...
