So what's the deal? Which carb is the right one?

Cruiser, with all respect, I wouldn't worry about what is right. I'd just make it it run good. Those mid 70's cars were terrible. Make it run like a 60's- early 70's car and enjoy the fact that you made it run properly. Also, I haven't read any of your previous posts. I hope I'm in proper...

    Cheapest ways to increase power

Lol. Yeah, I see that now. I wasn't the only poster to suggest a V8, but he picked me out. Like I said, I wish he would've just posted why. Heck, the OP even asked about it, and later mentioned he's a V8 guy! If he had looked around, he would've seen that I understand the small engine...

    Cheapest ways to increase power

I'm not going to read through this to see why you posted a "disagree" to my post 5 years later. Maybe you'd care to explain? If I disagree with someone, I explain myself. Nicely, of course! What up?

    Am I de-valuing this 72 Duster?

It'd be interesting to see what mpg's it gets b4 and after. Keep a log.

Slant Six overheat at cruise speed, especially going uphill

What Mark said. The lower hose can collapse at speed. (It gets sucked shut.) A stuck thermostat would overheat it at any speed. A shroud only helps at low speed. It directs the air through the rad. If the radiator is old, that's most likely the culprit.

    Is it smart???

I hear ya, Bill. What's cooler: A SS/AA, or a whisper smooth turbo'd slant? They are both waaaay cool in their own element. It's just that more people are attracted to V-8's than 6's. Back in the 80's, I stood behind Lydon & Johnson's SS/AA Barracuda, while it was idling, unattended, in the...

    Is it smart???

It may or may not be smarter, that's subjective. Myself, I think that it comes down to most people preferring V-8's.

Fuel Line Mod Done - Still Having Hot Restart Issues

This does sound like a percolation problem. Sometimes, lowering the float bit will alleviate the problem.

    Cheapest ways to increase power

You just have to realize that if you're into something that isn't mainstream, you'll get comments like "put an 8 in it". You'll go nuts if you let it bother you. I used to modify VW Bug engines when I was younger, because they were cheaper to work on. So, I know how you feel. (The first car I...

    Cheapest ways to increase power

Yep, and 318's ain't exactly lightning bolts either. I guess it's all relative. When I was a kid, we laughed at 318's. But we were comparing them to "real" small blocks and big blocks, not rice. Just my opinion...

    Cheapest ways to increase power

"Mmmmmmm, goood cracker." Put a weaker throttle spring on it and move the seat up a notch. Sorry, couldn't resist.... Find a stock 360 that runs. Take weight out of the car.

To De-Smog or not to De-Smog...

If I remember correctly, smog engines were jetted leaner, which made them run hotter. This was compensated for, partially by the air injection pump, which helped keep things cool. I'd remove all the smoggy stuff, and use a carb and distributor from a pre-smog motor. This is easy for me to...

    fuel issue after car sits.

Maybe this poster will respond yet, but don't you just love it when someone asks a question and then doesn't have the decency to update?

    fuel issue after car sits.

Gas sits in the bowl of the carburetor. After a couple days it hasn't evaporated. If you need to prime the carb, I would look for a bad accelerator pump. That's what "primes" the carb when you pump it. Some cars will run ok with a bad accel pump, once they're running. Empty fuel filters...

1974 Slant 6 backfiring through carb.?

No, I understand. I just like the new oil filter on an engine that was obviously toast! Like maybe, "I'll change the oil and filter on my car, now that I've beat it beyond belief". LOL!!

Hey Dave, I like the new oil filter!

1974 Slant 6 backfiring through carb.?

Was running ok when you shut it off last? I'd look at the dist. cap for cracks and carbon tracking. Wet cap, wires? Maybe the choke is stuck open, resulting in a lean backfire when cold? To put out a carb fire, crank the engine with the throttle closed. Just a couple ideas. Keep us...

Wish my Valiant ran this cool!

Did you check your gauge? Stick a thermometer in the rad. Watch out covering the rad. It'll get really hot when the ambient temp goes up; or running on the highway w/o airflow.
