    Need Help on Fluid choice

Kind of a can of worms question, because there’s so many varied opinions. I have to agree with the Lucas if you want a good quality product. For what it’s worth, when I ran older manual transmissions I would customize the fluid mix depending on how the trans reacted. Some work great with 85/90...

    Some snags with my conversion

Fluid in it or not will make zero difference. Keep in mind that gap will close up a bit after the flywheel, disc and pressure plate settle in together. (Usually within a couple of short drives) Try not to push the pedal all the way to the floor for a bit if you can help it.

Input shaft - life left or replace?

Zoom in on the syncro teeth and they look pretty worn.

    What's broke?

I used to be the stickshift (manual trans) diagnostician and builder for a nationwide chain. In neutral with the clutch out does sound like it could be the input shaft bearing, but when the clutch is out the counter gear cluster is also spinning. This means it could be those, or the input to...

    Reverse Bleeding Hydro clutch

The Ford Rangers were like that. Had to bleed up from the bottom to get the trapped air to move. It works great.

    Violent Take-Off Shudder

That could be caused by a problem with the dampener assembly in the center of the disc. Still a disc problem though.

    Violent Take-Off Shudder

As YR pointed out you have a clutch material issue. Believe him, and you will be on your way to solving the problem.

    Is this a bad idea?

Taking into account that it’s not a race car, my suggestion would be to just up the gears in the differential. Gear Vendors overdrives are thousands, and some cars even have to have the floor cut and modified. Then there’s also the expense of having the driveshaft shortened and rebalanced. Just...

Making a four-on-the-tree, has anyone tried this?

Don't forget it can be made electric shifted for reverse.

Making a four-on-the-tree, has anyone tried this?

I used to have a Datsun pickup with the 4 on the tree pattern until my Brother “borrowed” it without permission and blew the motor because he couldn’t find out how to get to 3rd and 4th. You had to pull the lever out away from the column, then up for 3rd and straight down for 4th if I remember...

Strange Noise When Clutch is Slipped

TO bearings can and do make noise part way in/out.

Do you paint your pressure plate housing?

You are actually safer leaving bare instead of risking surface contamination. It would suck to have a brand new clutch chatter. On that note, clean the disc and both surfaces with brake cleaner or... I use lacquer thinner on those and brake parts because it's a heck of a grease cutter and dries...

    Gear grind after fluid change

Exactly. Transmissions deserve tuning as much as anything else does. When you drain something you tried out, save and mark what it is. You may end up going back to one mixture.

    Gear grind after fluid change

A lot of people don't take into account the fact that the fluid differences cause a different drag on the gear to shaft mating surfaces, and not just how the syncros work or don't. Meaning if the gear itself resists stopping with one fluid over the other. With older manuals it's most always a...

    4 speed noise

You will most likely always hear some slight noise in neutral but it should only be a slight whirring noise. You gotta remember the input shaft, the counter gear and all the gears on the output shaft are spinning in neutral with the clutch out.

    4 speed noise

Or any of the three bearings I pointed out.

    4 speed noise

Noisy in neutral with the clutch out? This could be any of the other bearings including the input to output shaft rollers. Noisy input to output shaft rollers requires the input shaft and output shaft both to be replaced along with new rollers. Pretty much the same with the counter gear and...

Flywheel surfaced - is there a thickness concern?

One would think the shop would know not to do more than would affect the motor negatively, but you never know these days. To answer your question though, no worries.

    A903 No Neutral

Mine did the same thing, and they were stupid little things. I told the Wife one day that it seemed like the car is making sure I'm worthy or something. A little time together and I guess it decided, as it's been one of the most reliable and fun cars I have ever owned.

    A903 No Neutral

I guess this got missed, as he said "the entire brake system is torn apart due to me preparing to change everything from the master cylinder back, all fluids changed except diff." Which means to me he is seeing bare axles turning, and no brakes to stop them. Automatics and manuals both can do...

    A903 No Neutral

@Taebombo In the air I'm not surprised the axles turn. Trans fluid friction will do that.

Leak coming from A833 bell housing. Help!

Then the real fun stuff starts when you find out what made it start leaking. Could pilot bushing, front bearing going, or even a cracked front bearing cover. Someone had to say it.:D:rolleyes:

    Clutch adjusting rod grommet melting

They used to be brass or steel either one, so you could make one out of about any metal you want. Do titanium.:D Just kidding. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to make one out of something that won't melt. Whose dumb A** idea was that?

    Another newbie oil question

I my opinion your trans will let you know what works best. Trial and error is about the only way to know how a specific oil works in your transmission. Slick Shift oil for example, works great in some transmissions and not so well in others of the same model. Being hard to downshift when cold is...

    The tree of three

As well as what halfafish mentioned, there are Detents, Lockout's, or Interlocks (people use different names for them) They keep one shift fork from moving unless all the others for each gear are in neutral. (one not quite in neutral can stop another from moving) I think the first thing I would...

    Shifter Problems...

Am I correct in understanding from your description that when you let out the clutch after shifting into second gear it grinds? Or does it grind when moving the shifter towards second gear. If it grinds after it's supposedly in second gear you have a torn up gear set and not a shifter problem.

    Auto Transmission fluid

Depends. If I was rich I would use all new fluids, but I have reused both from swapping a radiator or a pan gasket. I just won't use the last little bit of either fluid when it goes back in, and they have to look really good.

whats the part number for this part?

With the availability of nylon stock at Ace Hardware and the mototool I would just make one way before I would pay 30 bucks or more for it. That said, it obviously completely depends on a persons ability to do it successfully. I can't imagine they are not around a lot cheaper than that...

    A855 - 5 Speed

Having to hold it in a gear is REALLY hard on shift forks. Did you not loosen the side cover and push it as far forward as possible like J par said to do? Sometimes the shift forks don't push the gear all the way into position and pushing the cover forward as far as it will go can help move the...
