the relay is on the drivers side just above the kick panel, usually a 5 pin style, kinda looks like a starter relay (In size), but uses spade style terminals.......

What type of ign system? Points? Electronic? If points, could be a bad condensor, if electronic, could be a bad box, maybe a plugged fuel filter, the backfire could be either, have to check the basics and go from there

well not knowing what year the car is, its sounds like a bad ground between the dash assy itself and the outer dash shell, i would try a ground jumper and see if they work, if not then it could be the voltage reg in the dash if its new enough, try that and let us know what happens

well, lets see, you replaced the ballast, thats good, ran for a while and died, no spark, ok, well sounds like we may have a couple of problems maybe, if it sits and cools, will it retain the spark? Just like kimmer said, check for vacuum leaks, lean carb, also i had one that the balancer slipped, that sucked to time, took some investigating, but after i put on a replacement one, that solved the problems, also, it did exactly what you descibed, when set to factory specs it backtalked...
