What happend on mine was the drain for the heater inlet ,the grill on the front just under the windshield dlocked up and rusted a hole every time it rained or I washed it the foot wells would flood !!!! hard job to fix as I had to take the fenders off and poke out the crud had to get my head...

I had the same trouble and used the sender unit from my 318 as it matched the gauge and have no problem now it seems that the resistance is wrong for the gauge with some of the after market senders , I also use a capilary type temp gauge in the top hose of the rad " just in case " to check on...
