Yes ground out the wire to the sender unit at the tank end , if the gauge goes to full then you have a sender fault , more probably the float has a hole in it !! mine did !!!! a wine cork will get you out of trouble or a new sender unit

Most of the guys here do put the two connections together as the wiring is about 40 years old and the ammeter is crap anyway I have also put a different alternator on my barracuda the output wires go straight to the battery and not through the dash/ammeter I have had no problems with it apart...
