    I had a 7-1/4 one time that had a 2.45 gear. I think it was out of a '75-'76 though.

    If it has a notch in the top of the bellhousing on the passenger side then it is for a magnum engine. The notch is to clear the crank position sensor.

    2.94:1 gearset

    I had 2.94's in my 87 Dakota with an a998 trans. Mild built magnum 5.2 with the v6 converter still in it from the v8 swap. (2000 stall). 3800 lbs with me, ran 13.69 @ 101 with a 2.09 60 foot time. I really like it too, could hold 2nd gear to 100 mph. I shifted at 6200. Now I have an a500 trans...

    X2 The pattern is way off! I did the same thing when I put the 4.10's in the 8-1/4 in my Dakota.

    Here is the master overhaul kit at the bottom part of the page. They have 3.21, 3.90 and 4.10. Didn't see any 3.55...

    I have a '70 Dart /6 that has a sure grip 7-1/4. I always thought that was a little strange. lol

    I'm curious to see how you have the o/d controlled too. I just swapped an a500 into my 87 dakota, but haven't wired up the o/d yet. Not looking to flip a switch on and off all the time.

    IIRC '96 was the last year the a500/518 trans had a hydraulic governor.

    '96 will still have the 8-1/4. The spline count changed in 97. They should be 27 spline until 96 then 29 spline in 97 and newer. I think they still used the 8-1/4 in Dakota's past 97 also tho.
