That sounds like a long shot to me Joe. However much weight on the straps causing it to fail would have been from the gas & tank itself. And you said it has a new tank. Can you get a pic of that area for us? C

Keep us posted Joe. Do you notice the gas fumes linger for days with the tank full? Do you notice it for days if the tank is only 1/4 full? Where do you suspect the leak? C

After re-reading your post and taking note that the tank was changed out... take a real close look at the sending unit. The new O rings that typically come with these units are notorious for not sealing which results in a seepage of gas. C

Hello Joe, and welcome aboard. The problem in the fuel line is not the steel lines as much as the rubber hoses that connect various parts - tank to line, line to fuel pump, pump to filter... I would start by trying to determine why you can smell raw gas for days. See if you can determine where...

The end of the strap without the J bolt goes forward into the triangle section. The J bolt goes into the slots under the spare tire well. BTW - The underside of your car looks great! C

You have ruled out the screen on the pick up tube being plugged? Before swapping out a lot of parts, how about running a line from a gas can to the fuel pump? C

I agree with Kit on this. Not being an engineer, if the slant develops 100 HP @4500 rpm, you don't usually drive around at 4500 rpm. Lets say you drive at 1500 rpm and only develop 1/3 the max HP, or about 30. In your equation, 30 HP would use 15 # of gas over 60 miles, or about 2 1/2 gal...

Do you have the charcoal canister still? That would go to that vent at the top of the tank above the fuel gauge. If you don't have the canister, you can run a return line from a fuel filter back to this vent. The '71 gas cap might also be vented. C

After it has been running will it start back up without the assist? How long does it sit before you have to give it a shot of starting fluid, overnight maybe? C

There is a '72 FSM floating around here that you can download. Try a search using '72 FSM and Abodyjoe (I think that's who posted it). Also, someone else posted the vacuum diagrams for '72 just a few days ago... C

And no, venting the gas cap does not substitute for the removed (why?) vapor canister. Hi Dan, my car was a basket case when I got it. There was no vac canister in the car or boxes. At this point I am only searching for various options I might have. C

Since the vapor canister is long gone from my'72 Duster, is there a way to vent the gas cap? Maybe a small hole drilled in that inner piece? I wouldn't plan to fill it up into the tube. C

I think you are going to have to drop the tank. Does it have gas in it? I would remove any screws holding the tube to the fender, remove the screws and slide the trunk floor seal up the tube a ways (you may have to lube it with some WD-40) and then drop the tank. C
