    340 rear main cap

If you grab a main cap from another engine there is a high probability that it won't align close enough to line bore. You might have to try half a dozen caps before you find one that is close enough. ( Of course you MIGHT get lucky on the first one.....but I never have!)

Small Block Oil Pick Up Tube Question

Ground the opening so I could drill and tap to 1/2". Got some steel tubing packed it full of sand and welded ends tempoarily with a tiny vent so I could heat and bend it enough to work. Welded it to a 1/2" nipple and attached it all to a fabricated screen assy.

    Main cap question?

The 273 caps are approx. 1.996 tall and the 340 caps will be approx. 2.247 tall. Same bore, but they may not line up exactly so if the fit is close they will need a line bore. The 340 caps are usually a few thousandths wider on the outside. Bolts are different length and 340 had special bolts...

1/2" I.D. SAE Cylinder Head Washers

The Caterpillar dealers usually stock a lot of the fasteners that haerdware stores etc, don't too. I've found quite a few heavy and extra heavy washers, heavy nuts, etc, at mine.....or they can look 'em up by dimension and usually have 'em in a day.

Did you try calling them? Even when Ken still owned the business he often didn't have them on the shelf but would make them when he got an order.

If you call ARP they will tell you that this is the first they've heard of it but if you hang in there the person at ARP will send you their fix.... a bolt to replace the stud.

Correct engine color for 1969 Dart 340 Swinger? [POLL]

The first two 69s I worked on were red and I was a little bit surprised when I started seeing that the normal color for 69 were blue/turquois. They were definately a different color (more blue) than the turquois used on big blocks.

    Source for 273 Head Gaskets??

Where do you folks get cylinder head gaskets for a 273 that don't have a 4"+ fire ring? I used the last of my stash a few years back and now when a friend wants to rebuild his 273 I don't find anything at parts houses other than the ones for 340/360 bore.

Go to street cam from the 70s-80s.

I thought S&S Cycles bought and owns Crane cams...? I also thought General Kinetics was bought by Lunati, then when Holley bought Lunati GK was just shut down....?

Go to street cam from the 70s-80s.

From my old memory as far as street cams go, the Crane Fireball was either really popular back then or they gave away a lot of stickers There were also quite a few Crane Blazer stickers in the windows of cars that went clickety clack.

    Replacing timing chain

You will not need the tool if you exercise reasonable caution. You do not need to remove the distributor. Yes, a dab of silicone is the tried and true method for sealing the timing cover corners back up to the pan gasket. Your new timing cover set will probably have the small end pieces for...

HERE WE GO AGAIN LA ROLLER CAM

A friend waited several months on completing his 455 build due to cam core shortage. His builder told him the company that supplies the cores to aftermarket cam companies has committed all of their capacity to an OEM. He was finally able to find an individual who had several cams saved for...

    Engine Paint Question

What was called turquois for small blocks was very different from the turquois of the big blocks. The fact that it was called turquois has lead to confusion but it was more of a light to medium blue with none of the pale blue/greenish cast of the big block turquois.

    273 engine swap into a Jeep CJ5

Welcome! Back in the 70s a friend put a 318 in an old military surplus jeep to use as his ranch buggy. He got an adapter bellhousing from JC Whitney. We fabricated everything else. I would assume someone still makes adapters for your combo as older Jeep/v8 swaps are one of the most common...

How much free play should new timing chain have?

I've had that happen too. I had a Comp timing chain for a very mild build and when I put it on there was way more slack than I thought it should have so I dug through my stuff and found a used Cloyes Tru-Roller and installed it. It is still running strong. Some of the new replacement chains...

    340 main caps

You wil have to find a good rear main cap from somewhere. (these can come from a 318 as they are the same but 318 forward caps are shorter.) The others can be bought aftermarket from places, like ProGram, and fitted. If you get used factory replacements or aftermarket they will need to be...
