I mis-read the original post. If the cover has the timing marks cast in then you would need the same cover. But I still think you need to repair the broken bolt. Replacing the cover and having a new gasket may have a problem with sealing because of the broken bolt

Pictures would sure help. I think you need the correct cover and repair the bolt hole. it's there for a reason and leaving it the way you found it isn't going to help you in the long run. Good luck. If you post a picture of the correct timing some one may have one.

We use one called Terra Guard you inject it through the low side fitting with the A/C running. It works great we have seen it seal compressor seems before. It also has a dye in it so you can find leaks very easy with a UV light.

I would put a high flow thermostat in and lose the restrictor if the water doesn't stay in the radiator long enough you can never get the heat out of the engine also adding something like water wetter to the cooling system it keeps the air bubbles out of the coolant. you can't cool air you need...

No overflow bottle from the factory. I don't think they started using a coolant tank until 1972 in any A-body but I'm not 100% sure about that but I have a fan shroud and tank out of a 72 Demon 318 car.
