    340 rear main cap

I suspect that I broke mine trying to torque a bolt that was too long in that same flange. I had Angeles Machine Works Inc. (PA Wa.) welded a stud and resurfaced the pump face in 2012. 35k miles on it so far! Good luck

Today, dollar for dollar, is the 318 faster than the 340 ???

318willrun has a 5.2 in the 12 second thread that cost him less than half of what i've thrown at my old 340 and I am not in the 12 second thread.... the driver (me) is prolly most of the problem but the facts are da facts.... carry on boys don't let this thread get closed!!

    Intake Manifold Question

Here is sorta a morph between both ideas and what I found when I removed my intake this morning! The hole in the gasket is "slightly over size of the port" so I can lay the gasket and then "slap sealer" on the metal to hold it against the head inside of the gasket cutouts. I cut two pieces...

    35 mph WOT power loss

i've had similar responses from having a little crud getting in my secondary needle, and by retarding the distributer a little too far. Are you smelling gas after stomping on it? Do you run the vacuum advance on your distributor?

    oil pump failed

In May of 2012, one of the mounting holes in the rear main cap broke. I had a machine shop level it out and add a stud, used a gasket and a standard oil pump and drove it down the road until May of 2020. When I took it to the machine shop i snatched that pump off and noticed that gasket never...

    oil pump failed

Looks like the pump failed due to an alignment issue when installed. Everything cleaned up well and no other damage was found!! Waiting on another pump and intermediate shaft. If I get as far as the hood back on and a new inspection sticker, I'll let you know...

    oil pump failed

really? hmm my (what i think is original) intermediate shaft is 8 11/16", the tip is beveled not square but it looks like it was machined that way or at least not done recently. it's wicked shiny inside and out ??? If the motor goes back to the machine shop, it'll be the on the list of...

would anyone do a compression test after checking/cleaning up the bottom to see if anything is appreciably different up there?

    oil pump failed

I tried to reinsert the hex bit on my drill and it doesn't engage anything down there. there is no wear on the intermediate shaft. It seems like it was just riding over the destroyed receiver in the pump. I'll definitely be inspecting anything on the bottom but I am assuming a tear down is...

    oil pump failed

long blocked and sleeved 340. Everything new but the valve train. Primed the new pump and got oil up top before buttoning it up and installing the motor. Started right up and sounded good. While working on getting up to temperature, I noticed the top end was kinda loud and then noticed zero oil...

    Replacing a crank shaft questions

Update: The SCAT 48005BI is actually the forged version of their 340 offerings in a 3.58 stroke. That's the direction I went. Also, that balanced kit comes with pistons for a 4.070" bore, so if yours has been bored previously, you will want to make arrangements for bigger pistons. No big deal...

    Replacing a crank shaft questions

this was helpful. The multitude of shallow holes in mine were a source of much confusion. update: the SCAT stroker kit and a Comp XE275HL K kit are on the way. I was a little concerned about the 106* lobe separation on the Howard, but the matching valve train recommendations listed in the...

    Replacing a crank shaft questions

Thanks for the recommendation and DCR discussion. I found a calculator on gofastmath.com I believe my original cam candidate required beefier springs and larger seat clearance milled in the head. All to say I think we were kinda headed in that direction with the valve train. I would like to...

DCR is different from an actual compression ratio though correct? DCR is like an index? by all means, my cam research was pretty limited. I think the Purple MP 292/509 cam was on my short list.

yes sir, that's the grind. I drive it about 5,000 miles a year. It's registered and inspected. I take it as far as Little Rock in the winter. I learned shortly after moving here that PineValley raceway was just a few miles away. Soooo I would also like to get my 60' times down a hair (1.97...

This artifact has hand ported 587’s and formerly the Comp 232-4 I’m trading for Comp 224-4 to better match my 3500 stall converter. I posted a SCAT rotating assembly kit and balancer add from Jegs earlier to get some opinions. I am going to reach out to the manufacturer when I can either way.
