    Oil Color

Yup. I would look at the plugs first. Instead of just looking at the oil, you could send a sample to be analyzed. And 17 years is a long time no matter how you look at it. Lots could go wrong.

    440 woes

I went out in my shop and checked a few rocker shaft bolts, and I couldn't find any that appear to have the thread damage the one in the pic seems to have. The other visible bolt appears OK so maybe one got torqued a little tight.

    440 woes

If that broken rocker is in the 6 hole then that would explain why the exhaust popping stopped. I have no idea why it would have a lot of oil in it though. Under the right circumstances I could see it sucking a little oil if the intake rocker was broke. How it could run so well...still a...

    440 woes

Well...keep us up to date. I'm a little skeptical. With the rocker damaged, maybe even the push rod also, not only should it have run pretty lousy, you should have heard it.

    440 woes

The popping may be a bad exhaust valve. It may not pop anymore if it is in the #6 hole, which probably isn't firing. How it could run great with an oil soaked plug is a mystery.

I will concede the cool factor, the look is great. The cool factor and the torque numbers aren't gonna solve this. I think the answer is in this thread already, but I would like to know the answer for certain. So many of these threads die with no resolutions posted.

    Need big block help.

I have numorous big block heads. You might convince me to give you a pair if you can figure out what you want. I have no idea what heads you have. They may be the ones with the extra cooling holes drilled in them. If you use that type get the right gasket.
