bending 5/16 parts store steel line

Yeah, that's the good kind. But you can make a serviceable bend with the cheapie one, just not terribly precise.

bending 5/16 parts store steel line

You can do simple bends with the cheapie tubing bender (the kind with a round spool and a handle). If you need to make complicated curves the pliers-style benders work better and give you more control. A 90º bend should be no problem.

    CAR COVERS ?

They do make lightweight car covers specifically to keep the dust off garaged cars. I recommend the custom fit ones which stay on better and are less bulky when removed. As for the last comment, you really cannot keep a car cover on a car stored outside year round. If you leave a wet cover on a...

    My 1/2” ain’t a 1/2”

Whitworth (an old British standard)? They were labeled by the bolt size not the head size.

Portable Tool Kit - what works best?

I have the same 3-drawer Craftsman toolbox, and also a cart like the one shown above, that I used to roll out to the driveway to work. Now I have a massive stack toolbox, so I just pull the tools I think I'll need and drop them on top of the cart (toolbox is in a small shop room at the back or...

    Building Engine Saddles

Looks great. I build mine on more or less the same principle, but used available scrap lumber so not nearly as tidy looking. Then I added legs to bring it up to work height. Mine has 2x4s across the base instead of plywood.

    Harbor Freight Tire Changer

I bought that tool to change tires on my MG's center-lock wire wheels, since they wouldn't fit the machines at the tire stores. Bit of a struggle for a lightweight guy like me, but it works. I also bought the bubble balancer, because the stores had no idea how to balance the wires — they'd come...

    Extendable Ratchet Set

Ah, yeah... I wasn't thinking "reach", I was thinking "leverage". Do the handles lock at the extended setting? The one I have doesn't -- it just slides, which makes it useless for reach -- it's just a glorified cheater bar.

    Extendable Ratchet Set

why would anyone need an extendable 1/4" ratchet? you can strip or break any bolt that small with a short handle. i do have an extendable 1/2" ratchet for those stubborn jobs, but it's a different brand, and probably 25 years old.

    Engine cradle

Thanks, I could have used those numbers. I like your design with the transmission support much better than what I cobbled up. My transmission is resting on a folding table, which happened to be exactly the right height to slide it onto from the tailgate without any lifting. Not lifting was a...

    Engine cradle

That's a little more elegant than mine. I just used scrap that was sitting around. I whipped this one out to pick up a motor in the back of a truck. Later, I added legs so I could take the motor off the engine stand, because I needed the engine stand for another project. The motor has been on...

    Engine Stand

Yeah, that looks like a decent one. Just don't get a 3-wheeler -- it's no fun tipping a block over on your foot.

Where would one get a 17/64 box wrench?

Personally, I prefer to use a box wrench. Less chance of rounding, and it stays in place on the bleeder during the open/close/open/close routine. I always attach a hose to the bleeder nipple, so adjustable wrenches, pliers, etc. just don't fit. Anyway, I found this place "brakesconnect.com"...

Where would one get a 17/64 box wrench?

I have those too. No 17/64. :pale:

Where would one get a 17/64 box wrench?

FYI I tried a 7 mm box and it just spun. I did break them open with a 7 mm open end held cocked, but that seemed like a good way to strip them. I finally hammered an old 9/32 open end down to 17/64, and that fit. But the tolerances are really crappy -- it fits on some flats but not others. BTW I...

Where would one get a 17/64 box wrench?

This is kind of a rhetorical question, but the reason I'm asking is because the new rear wheel brake cylinders I just received from Rock Auto (Dorman brand) have 17/64 hexes on the bleeder screws. I have two sets of tiny wrenches, but neither one has a 17/64. I checked the screws with a...

    Shop Press

It's more about the quality than the tonnage rating, I would guess. I mean, you don't need a powerful press for u-joints -- I do them in my bench vise. Better to have a 6-ton press with good steel than a 20-ton press built cheesily, IMO.

What tools and spare parts in your a-body

I removed the bumper jack so I wouldn't be tempted to use it. So, I had a small tool box with the basics (stubby wrench set, 3/8 and 1/2 socket sets, pliers, crescent wrench, tape, screwdriver w/tips, mini-hammer, mini-hacksaw), a scissor jack, a tall bin containing jumpers, a long 1/2 drive...

    Vise

Looks very similar to this one I got from my neighbor... it had been rusting in his side yard since he replaced his old garage. It has a bit more "patina" as you can see.

Are you Building / Remodeling / Upgrading a garage?

Ha! I was going to convert my 2-car carport to a garage... drew up plans for it... but the city tells me I can't do it because it's 8 inches too narrow for their current standard. They say it has to be 20 feet clear between the studs -- mine was built (in 1975) 20 feet wide on the outside of...

    tool consideration

12 points are for those situations where you only have room to turn the ratchet 2 or 3 clicks at a time -- it can be hard to get a 6 point on it in these situations. Otherwise, 6 point is stronger and obviously less likely to strip your nuts.
