    DLC Coated Lifters

The HD diesel engine manufacturer that I worked for had piston pins DLC coated in some high power applications. The DLC was expensive, but the other option was going to a larger - heavier piston pin to take the loading. The DLC did the trick.

Occasional Oil Pressure Light for 2-3 seconds in my 318. Should I panic?

Agree that the pick up is intended to be in contact with the bottom of the pan. For those that think a little clearance at the pick up to pan can help oil flow, it is easy to do that. Simply spot weld a couple of washers to the bottom of the pick up. Depending upon the thickness of the washers...

    Camshaft question

You can get the valve lift at the cam by using a caliper to get the distance across a lob from the base circle to the lob high point. You can get the duration and LSA by putting the cam back in the block with the crank and one piston-rod and one lifter the timing set and a degree wheel.

How to repair valve guide boss

If a shop was going to scrap your cylinder heads due to those valve guide cracks, that shop is telling you they are either 1) don’t have a clue what they are doing 2) only after your money And in response you should take your work elsewhere.

    J-Head Combustion Chamber Question

All that stuff can be blended in. ABC being in the combustion chamber won’t really affect flow, but by smoothing those out it will eliminate potential hot spots. Smoothing D will help low lift flow, a little, if the valve seats are all ready finished be careful you don’t slip into them. Try...

    More valve seal fun....NOT!

Why on earth would oil be pulled into the intake guides when there's a HUGE intake port? Rusty, you and I agree on a lot of things, but not this. The vacuum in a passage is effective in all of the passage, not just its largest cross sectional area. To prove that, get your wife's vacuum cleaner...

    Re using cast iron rings?

I would not re hone if the original cross hatch in the bore was still present. But that is not likely to be the case. If the cross hatch is gone and the bore is smooth, the ring is not 'seated' nor is it sealing well. The cross hatch is present along with the plateau hone to retain oil on the...

    Rebuilt Engine bearing wear

Those bearings look fine. Plasti Gauge is ok, but most folks just check one spot on a main or journal so they don’t see out of round. And there is a huge resolution and repeatability issue with plasti gauge,, how old are the strips, the temperature they are used at, just for starters. If you...

    Mopar R3 Block

Not wanting to detour this thread, but why and how does changing the lifter angle from 48 to 59 influence engine performance/durability? Asking as I have seen this discussed before and I don’t understand the basic background. Thanks

    Noise from engine

Sure sounds like an exhaust leak. But I would pull the valve covers and see if one of the rockers has a lot of play, as the noise could also be from the valve train.

    Break in oil

I use •LubriPlate 105 assembly grease on the main, rod bearings, timing chain and other lightly loaded surfaces. •Moroso Moly cam lube on the cam lobes and lifter surfaces, push rod and rocker arm contact points. •10w30 motor oil, non synthetic, something inexpensive with a cheap oil filter...

    Expanding the search

I put a Classic Air AC system in my 68 Barracuda. The install went fine, it is a nice kit, I had to call Classic once during the process to get clarity on one of the steps, Classic tech line was helpful. I already had an AC vacuum pump and gauge set so the charging was not an issue. Check out...

Advice on sealer for insert after stripped water pump/timing cover bolt hole

The Right Stuff may be OK on a stud or something that you never-ever take apart, but for those that use that product, have you ever attempted to take off a front cover or oil pan or valley cover or other sheet metal part that was sealed with The Right Stuff? You will destroy the sheet metal...

    What brand rockers are these?

Interesting that the original post mentions a cracked rocker and the photo that appears to be a match to that set (post #8) also shows a broke rocker.

What kind of documentation for used engine would satisfy you?

As a buyer of a used engine, if the seller gave me a firm hand shake and looked me in the eye and said “don’t pay me a dime until you have the engine installed and running and you are happy with it.” That would be good enough for me.

    School me on re-using a new(ish) camshaft

Question, posts3,4,5,7 all mention tossing the used lifters and buying new. Anything wrong with having lifters re ground? I know that Oregon Cam offers that service.

    New engine starting issues

Verify that you have power to the coil with the key in the ‘run’ position. You may have power to the coil with the key in the ‘start’ position, so the engine starts, but when the key is released to the ‘run’ position the power is disrupted due to a wiring fault or a defective resistor.

Connecting Rods needed for try his crank

You should get that crank cleaned up and checked before you put money into it. What do the heads and block look like? Do you know the current bore diameter?

    core 'revision' number...BS? BUSTED!!

If you have son’s with foundry experience, perhaps you should run what you wrote by them. As it makes absolutely zero sense. The sand cores used in gray iron green sand casting, used in producing the 340 v8 blocks that are under discussion here are one time use only. The single digit numbers...

340 casting "revision numbers" check in

And did you guys know that pointer with the dots around it is the casting hour marker. Work shifts were 8 hours, so if the pointer was at the first dot from the 12:00 position that mold would have been made in the first production hour, pointed at the second pointer the mold would have been made...

    core 'revision' number...BS? BUSTED!!

Back on part numbers, and using slant six blocks as an example, there are several block part numbers and with the exception of the steel vs cast crank difference, all of the blocks are interchangeable. Those part numbers were introduced sequentially and all part numbers were not all produced at...

    core 'revision' number...BS? BUSTED!!

Concerning how two 340 blocks made a day apart with the latter having a lower number. The mold sets 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 could both be ran the same day. Perhaps they started running 3 & 4 in the morning, but a problem developed during the run so that pattern set was taken out and patterns 1 & 2 were...

I had visited the Chrysler foundry in Indianapolis several times, V8 blocks would be cast 2 at a time. And I have 30+ years experience at the IH / Navistar foundry in Indy. Concerning the numbers seen on the outside of the casting close to the part number, those are Pattern numbers. Patterns 1 &...

    Priming the rebuilt engine question

There are probably a couple of million new OEM motors built every year and I would bet that none of them are pre lubed prior to starting the first time by spinning the oil pump. Many new engines have crank mounted g rotor oil pumps meaning that you need to spin the crank to build oil pressure...

    Lifter question...

Mopar slant six hydraulic lifters oil down through the pushrods. They are .903 diameter like a v8 hydraulic lifter. The hydraulic slant rockers are made with internal passages to take pressurized oil from the rocker shaft and direct it to the lifters. Although I cannot imagine the advantage of a...
