1972 Dart Magnum swap, R46RE Trans

Yes, cut the torsion bar crossmember out, cut the entire tunnel area above the transmission out, build a bigger tunnel, raise transmission up, rebuild top of torsion bar crossmember.

Just how ridiculous would this be?

All you have to do is modify the alternator mount bracket, lengthen the lower section that adjusts, allowing the alternator to "swing" farther, longer belt and done. Still looks and works factory

Building a 68 Dart for the strip

Put a decent converter in that thing. The 60fts are horribly slow

    5.9 swap in 71 dart

Keep it simple. Start with the basics. Check for spark during the no start condition. Check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail. That should point you in the right direction

    Junkyard Magnum Motor Finds

If you were local, I could build you a shortblock for less than 2k....I have plenty of 360 magnum cores. Shipping might be prohibitive tho.

360 mag with X heads anyone?

The "308"s are supposed to be the best of the factory LA heads, but like magnum heads, there are often cracked. That engine will respond well to the typical hop ups, carb, intake, ect. If it's a roller block, a small hyd roller cam upgrade is easy also.

360 mag with X heads anyone?

What in the world makes you think it's a magnum? Its older probably, or if your lucky, it's a 92 360 which is a roller LA, and would have came factory with "308" heads

    Magnum Swap with Carb

PAC beehives would be my choice, should be something available in the pressures required for the cam.

    Magnum Swap with Carb

Because it's being sold as a "performance" replacement engine. The 300 hp version could easily use the factory efi and a/c. The 380 horse version could not

    Magnum Swap with Carb

The 300 hp crate is a stock truck long block, cam and all, with a intake swap. The 380 hp crate is the same long block with a single plane intake, a bigger cam, and different valve springs.

    Magnum Swap with Carb

Yes all your plan sounds good. A bone stock 5.9 with a carburetor will typically make 300 hp or so. There is a significant gain with a cam swap, probably 30-40 hp better.

    The definitive list...

Yes. I think it's when you use the LA oil pan and a one peice magnum gasket that you have that gap to fill with sealer
  13. replicaracer43

    The definitive list...

I'm pretty sure the last one we did, you use the magnum pan with the one peice gasket, there is no cutting or splicing of anything.

    The definitive list...

Magnum oil pan will fit. LA motor mounts will fit. LA distributor fits. Get a intake, LA front cover, ALL his LA front accessories bolt right up. buy the huges cam extension to run fuel pump. Magnum flexplate should allready be weighted, slot one hole and it will bolt right up to the old 727. LA...

    The definitive list...

I have done the same swap on a 79 d100, with all the factory electronics, it's not especially hard, but a lot of studying the schematic to determine what you can get rid of. One important thing is you need the PDC (underhood fuse box) as it has the relays you need for the fuel pump and ASD...

    The definitive list...

The ballancer situation is because the earlier magnums used a bolt on crank pulley, old LA pulleys will bolt up no problem. The later magnums had a serpentine belt made onto the ballancer, so you need the earlier ballancer. The offset weight on the 5.9 magnum is different than the LA 360 also...

    Flex plate for 360 magnum

Yes, a neutral balanced LA flexplate will work fine

    Heads selection help 5.9 magnum

If your gonna mess with crack prone OEM heads, you need to have seats put in them. They crack between the valves, and migrate into the valve seat. Jegs sells a bare magnum replacement head, but the ports look worse than factory, and the valve guides are machined to large for the oem stems.

    Lunati voodoo roller short snout

When those factory magnum heads crack, its between the valve seats, and it goes THROUGH the seat, so it is a absolute waste of time and money to machine them. Lots of them run and dont leak coolant, but they are still garbage.

  25. replicaracer43

Which Oil filter are you using with headers?

I dunno, but magnums use a different filter from LA engines, don't know why
  26. replicaracer43

Which Oil filter are you using with headers?

    That's for the "LA" engines
  27. replicaracer43

Which Oil filter are you using with headers?

I meant brand. I run a set of dougs on a dart with a magnum 5.2, and use the regular magnum filter. WIX 1085
  28. replicaracer43

Which Oil filter are you using with headers?

Depends on what headers you buy.
  29. replicaracer43

    5.9 Magnum opportunity

Return, or return less will depend on the fuel rail on your donor engine. I just put a EFI 5.9 in my shop truck, out of a 97 van, it was return less. The factory EFI is pretty straight forward, not hard to wire up.

Getting Ready for the Magnum Swap. (help?)

And just for a example, I have a bone stock 5.2 magnum in a 71 dart, with a 904 and a 3:23 rear gear, that car gets 21 MPG on the highway, and runs about like a low compression 340 more or less.
