I had a spark plug wire that would occasionally get partially burned through. Started popping randomly as well. New plug wire and problem was fixed. Sometimes it is the easy stuff that causes problems.

Maybe not, I don't run a breather on my 408, just a PCV valve.

You could run a breather on the other valve cover and see if the oil issue stops, if so, positive crank pressure would be culprit.

Looks like you have angular misalignment.

First step is to get satisfactory alignment.

I have MT valve covers on my EQ heads and yes, the gaskets didn't line up well as identified in the picture above. I went ahead and used them anyway and they have not leaked so far.

Best bet is to put on a good temporary mechanical gauge and see what is really going on.

You can also drill a hole in the dowel and tap it with a 1/4 20 tap. You can insert a stud and use a socket over the dowel to allow a nut to slowly pull the dowel out into the socket.

To summarize: there are several ways to do this.

When I was lazy in my 69 440+6 with 3.55 gears and a four speed, I would driver around town taking off in second gear so I wouldn't have to shift as much. Didn't even whimper.

I have seen where you can get 12 volts at a terminal but the current carrying capacity does not allow the device to work. Try doing a jumper wire from the coil directly to the battery and see if it continues to run. You could have a bad connection or even the ignition switch itself.

I have done the same thing, works fine.

I think the number is supposed to be 3614378. I believe it is for small and big block engines without AC and power steering.

I think I will check my compression checker with a couple of gauges in my shop to see if they all read the same.

I think there are a couple of plugs on the front of the block as well.

I figured you could check the easy stuff first.

Oil pickup pushed against bottom of oil pan can cause oil pressure issues.

Maybe screw in a lag bolt into the tube and then use vise grips to pull out...

I put Eagle rods in my 408, only a little more than redoing my magnum rods.
