8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

Oh, hey, quick update... I couldn't resist going out and just checking on something... Both axles ARE evidently touching the thrust spacers because I can feel them moving against each other when I spread my arms and push against both axles at the same time. If I push one inward, the other moves...

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

So you think I can find an axle .060" longer? I'd be hard pressed to figure out how to even MEASURE an axle for such a small difference. You HAD an extra, but I don't. I'm not ignoring your suggestion, but I'm gonna try checking and rechecking as others here have suggested first. That'd make...

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

This may be the case... I'll look at that later this evening when I get back out to the garage -- in about 2 hrs. If they're not... then what? can I tap them toward the flange? or must they be pressed?

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

They seemed to seat well against the backing plates.

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

Very good. I'll try what you say. I suppose I should run the adjuster nut on the right side all the way INWARD first to create the room, yes?

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

I'll try what you say but another half inch? I'm only lacking .060 on the left side, where end play is .070. The right side adjusted fine with the adjuster nut, although it didn't seem to be pushing against the left axle.

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

No thrust spacer fallout But pushing inward on right axle has no effect on left axle.

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

Huh? They pushed i the way- enough to tighten the axles onto the backing plates. Wouldn't that mean they're seated?

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

Honestly, I don't know how to tell the difference between clutch or cone. How does it matter? The thrust buttons are the same anyway, aren't they? Do thrust buttons come in different sizes? Does the year of the carrier I got then make a difference? (I'm not sure what year it is) The...

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

Yes, the thrust buttons are on both sides, pin between them.

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

I can adjust the right side as you've outlined. Did so. But it has no effect on the left side end play. No adjuster on the left side.

8.75 Sure Grip axle end play - left side

O wise ones, I've just installed a Sure-Grip pumpkin in my 1970 8.75 rear end. (had a non-Sure Grip before -- both are 741s) I HAVE installed the pinion thrust spacer as well. The right side axle (with the threaded adjuster) adjusts end play beautifully. The left side (no adjuster) has...

    When is Sure-Grip actually necessary?

teringer... Astute observation. Thank you. I hadn't thought of that, but yes, I think you're right there. I'd post a "thank you" but I've yet to see that icon that would allow me to do so. I'm leaning toward the SG, for sure now. I don't intend to ever drive the car in the rain, but one...

    When is Sure-Grip actually necessary?

the car will be an occasional driver, good weather pleasure-driving only. Once or twice, (thrice?) a year may visit an 1/8 or 1/4 mile strip. Might live with the 2.9* carrier until the strip dates, too, and just swap 'em out when needed. I live in Montana. I don't drive rear wheel drive...

    When is Sure-Grip actually necessary?

70 Dart, mildly warmed up 318, MAYBE 300 hp is the plan. Automatic, 2000 stall. 3.91 rear ratio. Do I NEED Sure-Grip? Would it FRY one tire, or just spin a bit and then go? I'm thinking about putting an open carrier in first, and then just SEEING how it works out. I do know of an...
