    single barrel carb problems

So I had a fellow mechanic go through and rebuild my carburetor on my '76 slant. He tuned it a bit so it would idle higher when I start the motor which was fine with me since the motor seemed to want to die during idle anyway. Well I thought he fixed the problem but the carb seems to be...

ol' slant is dead... need help!

Found out after they rebuilt the whole motor and put it back in my 76, I was driving for almost a year on 5 spun bearings and the last bearing spun when I took that drive and overheated the motor.

ol' slant is dead... need help!

Yeah I'm not converting... This is a cruiser not a hotrod... Its 1800 to rebuild at the shop then 500 for his labor and taxes and new fluids cones to about 2500 total

ol' slant is dead... need help!

Found out knocks CAN come and go cause the way the bearing was spun, it only sometimes knocks. Regardless, a rebuild is in order!

ol' slant is dead... need help!

So the verdict is (after going to a mechanic and having several car enthusiast friends listen and look) I spun a bearing. I've been quoted by a respectable shop 2500 for the complete rebuild, labor and warranty Is that reasonable since classic industries offers a long block remanufactured for...

ol' slant is dead... need help!

Aside from the random comments and arguments that have been added to my questions... I changed the oil last night, drove it around for a bit then let it idle. I did notice the oil change has made it only knock while I'm accelerating or in the higher rpms at least. Still not sure where the...

ol' slant is dead... need help!

Does the pump Have anything in it that could be shaved down? I thought it was designed to have minimal moving parts.
  22. snowcrow

ol' slant is dead... need help!

Oh and they're definitely shavings not pieces.
  23. snowcrow

ol' slant is dead... need help!

What if it was shavings from the oil pump?
  24. snowcrow

ol' slant is dead... need help!

They were inside of the oil filter in the top holes. I would post a pic but I already threw the shavings away. I'm currently sitting in the position where my car is on the jack with no oil and wondering if I should even put more oil in. I bought 40 weight, zinc and oil stabilizer for this oil...

ol' slant is dead... need help!

Yeah the magnet collected them easily and they were definitely steel cause they even had little blue and yellow tint from heat.

ol' slant is dead... need help!

So I did the oil change and ran a magnet through the oil to see if I got anything and I couldn't see even a fragment BUT when I took off the oil filter, there were 2 centimeters long pieces of metal that were paper thin. What does that mean?? Could it be shavings from the oil pump or shavings...

ol' slant is dead... need help!

Thank you very much redfish and memike I definitely will start there. The knock was only a little tick back when I would drive it for about 20 minutes at freeway speed (65) I've been asked a few times about the hydraulic lifters but I wouldn't know. I do have a oil light but I didn't think...
