So i found a 7 inch but instead of the 4.5 in Backspace , it's 3.5 in. Would that work because its only 7 inches overall instead of 8 inch?
It might. But might also be very tight on the dart. It is better suited to duster and demons.
Let’s talk wheels. Basic stuff here. Wheel width is measured from inside of bead to inside of bead. When we talk about front or backspacing that measurement is taken from the mounting face of the wheel to the the lip of the wheel (not the bead area). The lip’s of the wheel extend 1/2” beyond the bead area
So: the measurements that are important to us are the wheel width and widths use when calculating spacing. EG:
A 15x7" wheel has an overall width of 15x8”
If a 15x7” wheel advertises 3.5" backspacing that means 4.5” is the outspacing (3.5+4.5=8)
This is where it becomes difficult on the dart, with the centerline 15x7 3.5" backspacing there is a lot of outspacing and it all becomes very close to the fender lip. If the lips on your inner fenders were rolled or cut out it may work but will still be snug.
The ideal backspacing on the dart is between 4.25-4.5 even as much as 4.625". Which would give the outspacing range of 3.75”-3.5” based on a 7 inch wheel. Tire width also comes into play with all this. The wider the tire the more it bulges beyond the lips of the wheel.
The duster and demon/dart sport have a more generous wheel well area so they can tolerate wider wheels or wheels like this 7” centerline with the 4.5 out spacing. My duster (attached photo) has the 7" Centerline you are interested in (4.5” outspacing, 3.5" backspacing) and with a P255/60r15 tire the assembly is pretty darn close to the lip. About 3/8-1/2” on one side tire to lip clearance and an 1/8-3/8" on the other side. Most cars have variances side to side just do to the cars manufacturing tolerances.
If it’s too close to the outer lip on your dart with a 255 (10.2"w) tire your could try a
245 (9.7"W) and then a 235 etc…. You never did mention what your desire is when it came to tires.
