bought a 340 block and crank 12/10/68 ,clocks indicates D, hand punch 9B331245, also located at front eng, L5 and R8. What I do no Dec/10/1968. not sure about the crank V 50 it has a 1/8 groove along it, any info would be greatly appreciated thanks

The block you have is the 2780930 block for 68-73.The (D)is for the day shift. The 9b331245 is the year, assembly plant, sequence number. Its a 1969 block, built at the Hamtramck MI plant, and was the 331,245 motor built. The crank if it has a 1/8 parting line down the length of the crank, its a cast crank. This is a problem,as all the origanal cranks for the 340 are forged,so check the codes and marks to be sure.Check for paint marks and codes on the number 6 counter weight to be sure. The L5 and the R8 are these on the deck surface or on the casting of the block,Mrmopartech

These stampings are located at the distributor end of the block. the R8 is passenger side and the L5 driver side casted on the block. 1/8 parting line is on the last three counter weights with a second one on the second last one about 3 " away. also the last counter weight the letter R and below it /50\, second last counter weight has ll and V bellow, timing chain area cast AAQA, thank you for your reply
