Okay, laying under the car as I'm getting a lot of petrol fumes when hot out and I'm looking to see what could be the issue. I see the feed line off the tank to the engine. I also have a vent pipe that is connected over to the side of the car where there are 4 lines sticking down out of the trunk. Then another line runs to the front of the car and connects to the rocker/valve cover breather. I'm assuming this is the active vent system using the engine as a storage for tank fumes. Does not look an ideal set up as would rather plumb in a charcoal cannister to store the fumes to be burnt off when the engine is running.

The issue is that in the back where the four lines are there are only the two previously mentioned hooked up. Where do the other two lines go? The are open right now. Looking inside the trunk it looks like they all just hook into a pipe looking thing in the trunk. A strange looking set up for sure.

Anyone know or can help. I'd like to get all hooked up correctly and stop the petrol fumes filling the garage. Probably not a good thing with a gas fired water heater in the garage as well!!

Cheers

Do you have the big tube running up in the trunk ?

Mine has 4 lines running from the tube to the gas tank and the other is the vent line from the valve cover which also goes in to the tube.

Thanks for the great reply and especially the pictures!

Looks the same sort of thing you have. I had not looked where that strange extra pipe in the trunk went, just saw it was there.

On my car, the line to the far right in your picture is hooked to a short hose and then into a metal line that goes up to the front of the car and hooks to the valve cover breather.
The one next to it has a rubber cap on it that is probably not factory I would guess and the one next to it (third one from the right in your picture) is hooked to the tank.

The other pipes have nothing on them at all and are just open to the atmosphere.

So, from your post then I need to be looking around on the tank to see if I can see the vent connection and look for more connecting pipes correct? I wonder what the purpose was of making four vent pipes going to the same place? Volume? Or, I guess, given enough vapour in the pipe piece it could possibly condense and in theory flow back into the tank.

Thinking of ordering the factory shop manual CD I see on Ebay all the time. Think it is worth having? Only think I have so far is some of my old motor manuals from '71 and a paperback type Haynes Manual that seems pretty lacking.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

There should be 4 lines coming out of the driverside of the tank. Maybe your tank was replaced ?

Not sure, looks factory. Will have a look later this afternoon. Hit 100 degrees F where the car is now so I've decided to sit in the nice cool air conditioning until this evening when I can get back to looking at it.

If the lines are there then can I just hook fuel line up to them straight across? In other words, do certain ones have to be hooked to certain ones?

Thanks again for the help.

Cheers
