Hey everyone,

I am currently getting set up to install a 69 383 into my 68 Valiant. This motor did not come with a flywheel.

I have located a good 727 in a 78 Newport with a factory 400.
Can anyone tell me if I will have any issues using this Newports flywheel torque converter and transmision with my planned set up??

Thanks for all your guys help

mopars dont use a fly wheel they use a flex plate, ring gear an converter are as one

The 383 is a internally balanced motor. The 727 from the 400 was a externally balanced unit. When a motor is externally balanced, the dampener and the flywheel/flexplate/convertor are used to counter balance the assembly. In your case the convertor will have weights on either side of the drain plug that would need to be removed, and a flex plate bought from B&M to help with the offsetting of weight. This way you can install any convertor with out a balancing issue.Mrmopartech

Since you are putting the trans on an internally balanced engine, just make sure the balance weights for the 400 external balance are knocked off of it.

If you try to run the 400 TQ converter, it will not be right on a 383. The 400 converter likely has weights attached to it to make up the external balance characteristics of the 400 engine. Mopar generally didn't use weighted flexplates

MrMopartech thanks for the explanation. I am a pretty well versed mechanic but am reletivly new to mopar engine swaps.

so if I understand this right I need a new aftermarket flexplate made for my 383 and to remove the weights off the TQ converter. The rest of the transmision should work fine.?

Flexplate should be fine, knock the weight off the converter.

Trans is OK to use
